Razor cracked

I didn't know where to post this (maybe it belongs in the Razors section) so I leave it to the discretion of the mods to move it if they deem it appropriate...

I have a Wald Es-Ese 6/8 round point that is my second razor. I have had it since March and have been storing my razors in a pipe rack, tang side down, in the bathroom (which currently has no working shower, so no typical bathroom humidity. I had to take a hiatus from straight shaving due to a significant bout of sciatica which left me unable to stand for any extended period of time without support.

I have been feeling better so I have returned to my straights and when I went to wipe the oil off the razor this morning I found that it "developed" a crack (about a an eighth to a quarter of an inch) perpendicular to the edge not quite an inch from the toe of the blade. Needless to say I am very bummed about it, but I wanted to ask if anyone can explain how this might have happened. Could it be the manner in which I have been storing the razors?

All I can say is "Arghhh!!"

Sorry to hear about your illness and your razor.I wouldnt think the way you were storing it would have caused it to crack.Is it posible it was already had a hairline crack and you just didnt notice it.It has happened to me a couple of times when I purchased them.I got them home and started to work on them and then I notice the cracks.Hope you feel better soon .

Cracks in razors tend not to just happen. Often if an inexplicable crack appears there's a slightly sheepish culprit.

Agreed, Cracks tend not just to happen, However, you may have missed it earlier, it may not have been as pronounced as it is now. It may be able to be repaired, but I'd leave it to a pro. Cracks need to be stopped, period. Normally, you'd take a micro drill,and drill a small hole on either end of the crack, then I'd fill it with epoxy or something. Depends what your scales are made of. Also, if you can, this is a great opportunity to get some nice new scales...Max is just an email away....I've been wanting a set of Jade Ghost since I saw them.

Disclaimer: I am in no way shape or form a pro razor restorer. This is best left to the pro's, Lynn, Glen, Max, etc....My advice would be to replace the scales....

Thanks for your replies, suggestions, and sympathy. I may have not made myself clear, however, for the blade itself is broken, not the scales. I used to shave with this razor, and I am certain I would have known if the blade was broken. JimmyHAD's question about someone else having access is a good one. My SWMBO's 17 year old son lives with us for half of the week, and he may have been curious about my razors but I am not in a position to ask any questions about it. I believe the blade is beyond repair, as the split in the metal is a pretty decent size. It was in very nice shape, with little hone wear and some nice etching. Oh, well...it is a good lesson not to get too caught up with material things....(but Arghhh!! nonetheless).

That's the wrong lesson.

The good lesson is to keep your razors safely away from the little bugger!

You could cut it down, albeit the blade is shorter but still shavable.

Sorry to hear about your misfortune. Insult adds to injury when you went to go shave, must be frustrating for you. I would say to add a new straight razor to your xmas list and see what happens.
