So, I am about to purchase a Tony Miller horsehide strop... I had planned on getting Horsehide and linen, and then going Linen - Latigo - Horsehide, and using the cotton on my old Latigo for some CrOx... Turns out TM is out of Linen... Would you guys suggest another Cotton, and just paste one of them, or the Nylon for stropping, and my old cotton for paste, or getting the hard wool felt and horsehide to paste the wool, and use cotton to strop.
Decisions, decisions... Whaddaya suggest?
You can put your paste on just about anything, felt, denim, leather, canvas, even balsa wood from the hobby/hardware store. Its just a matter of preference.
Well I've never tried anything but the cotton, and had planned on linen, but it's out of stock, so I was reall;y trying to get an opinion based on everyone's preferences.
So you have an old latigo/cotton. You could reasonably go with horsehide/latigo and use one of the latigo strops for paste. Personally, I have better results with paste on leather for some reason. That way you could keep your current latigo/cotton and use the new one for an everyday/finisher.
That's a good idea, but a good deal too costly for me, unfortunately...
No, it has to be horsehide and some fabric... I'm personally leaning towards another cotton, but want to try out, or at least get feedback on, the Nylon...
I wish the linen was still in stock, but I /really/ don't want to wait until mid January
Tony's cotton is really nice. Unless you plan on sticking out the linen drought, I would go with cotton again.
**for the record the $7.50 practice strop is a superb paste option
Cotton it is... I wanted to experiment with the others, but, why not stick with 2 cottons since my current one pulls it's own weight and then some... Make one a paster... Thanks, Ookla.
Also, I had one of the practice strops, but it went to a donation to another member, and I'm partial to 3'' strops... just my "thing"... I want to buy a legitimate 2.5 inch strop so I can give it a try, but if it doesn't work as well as my 3, I don't want to have wasted the money

I'm looking at TM's site.. I did my math wrong. I can, in fact get a Latigo/horsehide strop, which would leave me with one Cotton/pasted latigo strop, and one Horsehide/latigo strop,
Or I could go with Horsehide and cotton. Leaving me with a Latigo/pasted cotton, and Horsehide/cotton...

ok so you have cotton, latigo and are getting horsehide for sure.
and want to experiement with pastes....
that means you should get either the wool or the webbing.
remember that each component has two surfaces and the fabric ones are functionally the same on both sides.
why don't you experiment on your current strop first? you can see what a paste would do on the reverse of the latigo component and on the cotton.
The wool is better for pasting, and the nylon is higher friction for pre-stropping correct?
'Cause I'm thinking I may just bite my knuckle and wait for the linen to reemerge, so I can paste on my cotton, and use the linen pre-leather...
Is that a good course of action... Or should I just go with nylon or wool?

i think you need to look more carefully at the differences at the various components and why some are preferred for particular tasks. to me it seems that you're going based on a 'hype' of some sort.
as i already said, linen is a bit more abrasive than cotton, but that makes it 'better' only if you want more abrasive fabric side.
likewise latigo usually has more draw than a horsehide, and I believe that translates in more abrasion too, and that is better only if that's what you want (i personally am not a fan of it and prefer to use fabric and shell, but some people would rather use latigo only).
I have used the webbed fabric for few weeks and it seems to work very well. I hear it is very good for pasting as well, but I also hear that the wool is the best surface if you'd be using diamond paste as it doesn't produce the typical harshness on the edge that diamond does.
so, you should answer the following questions
- what do I want from a strop that my current strop doesn't provide
- what will horsehide give me instead of, or in addition to the latigo I have
- what will a second latigo give me
- what will a second cotton, or a linen, wool, or webbed fabric give me
unless you know why exactly you are getting it, you are buying another strop just because you can afford it and in this case it makes very little difference what you get, and would make sense to get something that you don't currently have, both as leather and as fabric.
were i you i would hold out for the linnen .latigo you got, cotton you got horsehide you will have so if you want a 4th option... january isnt that far away for something thats gona last your lifetime
- I want a finer polished edge, that's why I'm getting horsehide to compliment the latigo
- I've been told (and shown, once) that the horsehide puts a better finished edge after latigo
- This was Ookla's suggestion, He told me he had better results pasting Latigo
- A better, less expensive "beginning attempt" at pasting.
I think I'll go with the Nylon for a daily strop, and paste my old cotton, because the Abrasive linen doesn't quite sound right, I just want something to create the friction on the blade pre strop, not somethign that wears it down. So, Nylon -> Latigo -> Horsehide sounds right, and then use Crox or some alternative on my old cotton.
