Can't handle the Wedge

I have three razors:

King Cutter 5/8 spike point
Dovo Special 5/8
Greaves 7/8 wedge

I just CANNOT get a handle on the Greaves - it's shorter than the others, its's heavier, and the hollow grind of the others seem to work better for me...

The short blade on the Greaves makes it really hard to see what I'm doing in the mirror, and the wedge grind seem to really be a challenge fo rme in finding an angle.

It's also more difficult to strop - I think the others navigate the stropping action better.

Big wedges are quite a bit different than smaller full hollows. the weight difference alone requires adjustments not only for shaving, but stropping too as you mentioned

It can improve with practice, but everyone has their own preferences too

Barry, put it away for a couple of months and when you have that much more experience pick it back up and I'll bet you'll find it wasn't as bad as all that. Might even be darn good IME. :) At least that is what happened with me when I returned to the big wedges.

I restored the Greaves myself and got it nice and shiny, and made some cocobolo scales for it - still yet to be pinned, and had it honed.... but it beats me every time :)

I'll bench it for a while and maybe return to it mid-2010.

i remember an old drum and bugle corp saying from a long time ago: know the wedge, be the wedge, do the wedge. myself i love wedges, i would be willing to help you part with it if you really wanted to. lololol:needcoffee:

I feel your pain, I have a Boker wedge that feels right in the hand. However, destroys the face, compared to my other razors , both full hollow, it feels clunky.
I am planing to do a full restoration and then send it to be honed before giving another go with it. By then my technique will hopefully improve enough to use it properly.

I shaved on Saturday with my Dovo Special 5/8, and it went really well but I did get a bit of razor burn on my lip and chin... Cheeks and neck went fine, but I had to touch up with a DE.
