Thread: Razor from Grandfather

I recently received a straight razor from my girlfriend's grandfather (he past away) and I would like to know if I should have someone hone it or if I'm better off with a shave ready razor like the one Ruprazor is selling.

Basically, is this razor worth something (other than sentimental value of course)?

What a nice inheritance and welcome to SRP! It looks like you can send that razor out and have the bevel reset on it, cleaned up and honed with very little problem. From the hone wear, he used this razor for quite a while. I'll put money that you'll get a great shave out of it once you have it restored.

Whew! When I first saw your post I thought it said you got a razor from the "Godfather." I mean, how cool is that?

Anyway, I'm no expert, but it looks like it has some honewear which may or may not make a difference when sharpened. Why not send it to one of the honemeisters here, maybe Lynn at SRD, and have it checked out.

Yes, a new shave ready razor would be nice, but it may not be any better than the razor you now have. And even though it's not from the Godfather, it would still be pretty cool to be shaving with a razor passed down from your grandfather.

My vote's get that puppy honed and go at it! If you go to Member Services in the Classifieds, you can find a few honemeisters that can put a great edge on the razor.

Welcome To SRP! I'd love to have a razor my grandfather had but the only one I know of is a Gillette Adjustable that my uncle inherited and he shaves with it. I'd get her honed by an expert and use it.

Welcome to SRP. I don't want to be a wet blanket but IMHO that razor isn't worth the price of honing it up. It has a lot of hone wear and although it could be honed and used my guess is it wouldn't bring $5.00 on ebay.

OTOH, if it was my grandfather's razor I would have it honed up no matter what. Being my girlfriend's I might have it done to show my appreciation for her kindness. Another way to go if you have any ambitions to eventually hone your own razors would be to save it for a razor to practice with when you begin to hone your own. Just my two bits.

Go for the shave ready razor, but I wouldn't wimp out on grandad's. After shaving with a new razor you might be pleasantly surprised with your new find, and it never hurts to have more than one razor.
