He and another guy named Vladach were the top guys when I came on SRP, search out some of their old stuff...
Another factor to consider is what it's like to work with the different materials. There's a post in the Wiki about toxicity of different sawdusts. Epoxy dusts are no good either, and working bone or ivory on a belt sander makes a good runner up for the Smell of Death.
I got some very pretty 1/8" x 3 x 24 sheets of dark cherry, curly maple, and curly mahogany at Rockler; they've been user-friendly and easy to learn on.
