I've shaved my chops twice now with both my left and right hands, the results have been OK- just OK. I can hear the blade "ting" while cutting every hair. Is this normal or am I doing something wrong? The blade is a "shave ready" Dovo Special honed by Lynn. It is (was) sharp.
Full hollow blades flex while they cut, so they "sing" - hence "singing hollow grind." Pitch and volume vary with the grind.
Yes, what you are experiencing is normal.
As stated the grinds will produce different sounds as they mow down the hairs. What really matters is the feel. As long as the razor isn"t pulling or having other unwanted side effects your all good.
would the type and density of the lather you use also affect the sound?

The first couple times I tried out a wedge, I was disconcerted at the lack of that trademark sound. In fact, I thought it was utterly dull and was sliding off the hair instead of cutting! I had to stop after the first cheek and lean into the mirror and feel my face to make sure that it was working!

I hear the sound, too, when I shave. You can also hear it on Lynn's video. I kinda like it. :)
I'll be getting my first full hollow ground in a week or two! I can't wait to hear that sound, I've been using a disposable blade straight and although it works, it's not the best.
Yes I managed it yesterday during my second ever straight shave, it was so pleasing to get the correct angle, and cut instead of scraping.Quote:

Actually, the whiskers emit a low moan when cut. It's not unlike the sound from a flower or blade of grass when their lives are snipped short by a human bent on the destruction of the environment. :soapbox:

the "singing" of a good cut is a beautiful sound, HOWEVER...
Do not confuse it with the "shriek" of the blade when its being held at too high of an angle. In this case the steel is actually vibrating as it snaps back and forth over the hairs, instead of cutting cleanly through them. This can cause premature dulling of the blade, as well as give a rough shave, and possible "burn"

Actually the sound changes between my 5/8's and my 6/8's but the sound is specially useful when you don't have eagle eyes (my case); I hate to shave with my glasses on so I have to rely a lot on the symphony I hear when I shave the whiskers away.
In the case of my 5/8's the sound tends to be higher pitched that the larger and more heavy 6/8's
You should try not shaving for about four days and let your beard grow out. Then when you shave with a straight you can't hear the hairs moaning, you can hear them scream.Quote:
