I've tried to make make lather with leaving soap bar in the bottom of the mug and got really good results. Are there any issues with doing so comparing to "moistening" the brush on the bar and then making lather in empty mug?

I don't think so.If you get good results,that's fine.I think some guys "load" their brush on the puck,then go to the bowl to add cream,glycerine,etc.,then really whip up some lather.I think people did it straight off the puck for 100 years or so.......
No nothing wrong with this if it works for you.
The only down side to this compared with doing it in another bowl or on your face is you will probarly use your soap marginaly faster but hey just as exscuse to indulge in some AD.:)

Look in the child section of the market for
right sized small plastic bowl, cup or food storage containers
should you add more shave soaps to your collection.
I mention this because a puck of Mitchell's Wool Fat
in their way cool container is twice as expensive with
the container as the refill is. Same for Tabac and
almost all the other fine soaps where the container
as cool as it is can slow ya down on the purchase decision.
It is more impressive to have 20 shaving mugs with pucks in all of them!!! :tu

Sadly too many and there is a risk
with shelf life. Not so bad with classic

I must admit I am finishing off the last of
a fine shave soap I found in Australia 20 years ago.
Some soaps do age well. This is the soap that is
in my soap mug. My soap mug is a bit deep so
the bottom of the mug is a puck of Williams
that holds my prize soap at the right level.
Mixing in the mug is my preferred method. I don't dump out the water when I'm done, allowing it to soak into the soap. This seems to keep it nice and moist, making for an easy lathering job the next day.
Building lather start-to-finish on the soap tends to make for a more soap-rich lather. This is all well and good, if that's what you're after, but there are two points to remember:
- some soaps need relatively more water than others to lather well, which can be tough if you're scrubbing off more and more soap while you're adding water;
- allergies/sensitivities that you might not otherwise encounter can crop up if the lather is very soap-rich.
