6/8 entry level Dovo should be fine. THe tortoise is a real looker. I would not hesitate to recommend you one.
Cheers,
JF
The 6/8 tortoise shell Dovo was my entry razor and I loved the way it shaved.
You can't go wrong with it for your entry investment.

+1 on the 6/8 Dovo Special. If you are starting out I wouldn't worry so much about what type of grind to get. I did that when I started. It created in me a search for the "perfect" razor when in fact I should have just been focusing on my technique. It was easier for me to blame the razor instead of my technique. It took me too long, and way to much money to realize this. :banghead:
Good luck and make sure to get one that's shave ready razor from a reputable source like straightrazordesigns
More important than the grind is starting with a razor you know is truly shave ready. That way you can focus on your technique (prep, stropping shaving) and not waste time wondering if you razor is sharp. So a Dovo obtained from SRD or another trusted source would make sense.
James,
You will not be disappointed with an entry level 6/8 Dovo, full hollow, either the Dovo Best, or slightly more expensive the Dovo Special (Tortoise). I have both of these, and they are great shavers :)
The Dovo Best 5/8 half-hollow is also another great shaver, and very well priced.
I started with wedgier blades as I thought they would be 'better' for my tough beard. As my skills progressed, I found that the full hollows actually gave me more comfortable shaves.
Please remember that shaving preferences are very, very personal.

Have fun !
Best regards

i started(still am) with a dovo 5/8 ebony silversteel, nice shiny razor shaves good (in my opinion)
My first razor was a DOVO Black Star, its a great shaver, and it holds its own against my more expensive razors as welll..!
Heres the link from the Wiki on recommended beginners razors and the rationale behind the recommendation:

Good luck and keep us posted!
my first razor was also the dovo 5/8 turtle shell..........while i do like a wedge. the full hollow just does so much better
james,
You have a lot of good advice here, particularly since the previous posters substantially agree with me. :) I am quite fond of my DOVO 6/8 Special: it looks good, shaves well, and its fairly large shank dimensions and top and bottom jimps make it easy for me to hold both while stropping and shaving. The icing for that cake is that the fake tortise scales are really handsome. I have other razors too (bad RAD), but the "Turtle" will always stay in the rotation.
good shaving,
:beer2:
Hello, James:
I agree with all the suggestions made here: the tortoise shell "Dovo Special" and the Dovo "Black Star." I like to add one more, since I am especially fond of it, and that is Dovo's "Perlex." This is not only a beautiful razor, it is also a nice shave.
Regards,
Obie
I agree with all the suggestions above,,,
But 6/8, half hollow, round point and yes the Dovo is an excellent one...
That size and grind is basically dead center then you can decide which direction to go on the next razor.. Oh yes there will be a next one Muhahahaha RAD ya know...
It will be hard to find a new blade that is other than a full hollow grind.
The difference between a 5/8 or a 6/8 is often overlooked. IMO if you get
less than three fine shaves from a DE you might look for the bigger 6/8+ blade.
The description of the Feather replacement blades on classicshaving.com
is interesting in this context of blade selection (light, super, professional).
As always give a look at the Classified section above. You will see
two general classes of restorations. Some are a simple cleanup made shave
ready blades and others are WOW what an artist can do to a historic treasure.
They are always worth a good look...
I saw a number of folk comment on Dovo as a cannot go wrong first blade.
+1 on that..
I have five Dovo ranging in price from a little to a lot. The blades on the inexpensive ones
shave as well as the extra fine buffalo horn prize I found in Australia 20 years ago.
When there is a difference it is me on the hone or strop much more than the steel.
If you are just starting, your first two blades could be modest priced ones.
Beyond three go for it. Same as cars... if you work on cars you often need a second
car to go hunt parts in or get to work in. True, any second razor will do ... DE, tossable BiC
...
Any grind would be fine for a shaver.
Either Dovo will do well as a first razor. My first razor was the Dovo Tortoise and it took an edge well and shaved well. Still have it and it is still part of the rotation.
Good Luck,
Pabster
