Wanting to use strop paste, can it be on a fabric strop?

Hello,

My razor is starting to bite as i shave and is no longer passing hanging hair test. I now have a lovely 3" latigo brown strop from Fendrihan w/ fabric strop and one 2" fabric strop left over from the strop i learned on that was butchered for use with my rolls razor. Can I put paste on that 2" fabric strop or must it be a leather one? and What paste is the best for keeping a really sharp edge? Chromium or .25 diamond paste or Other?

Or should I splurge for a barber hone?

Also my stropping technique, what feeling or sound should i hear? I think with this new strop I am making things worse lol alot of drag on the sharp part of the blade giving a dull low scraping sound... too much angle into the strop maybe? Should the spine still be touching the strop?

The linen will work fine. I like CrO, but lynn honed a razor for me finished w/ diamond on felt that was pretty nice.

Do you allready have CrO and diamond paste or are you looking to buy one?

You can put paste on the left over fabric strop. Either diamond spray or CrOx will work well on there, just dont put too much on. A little goes a long way! :)

In terms of which paste to use, both work well. I find the diamond spray leaves the edge a little harsher than CrOx, but using it on a fabric helps reduce this. Its really up to you which one you use, they are both good IMHO. I've not noticed any difference in sharpness though.

Looking to ppl for info before i buy, Duno what my options are just yet.

I haven't done it myself but I hear that the crayon style chrom-ox that SRD sells is real effective on the fabric and easier to apply than powder, liquid or paste. There is also the diamond spray but if I only had one it would be the chrom-ox. IIRC Lynn has posted that it works well on the fabric with the crayon.

When I was first starting out, I bought the $4 packet of CrO from chrisL in the classifieds. I have used it on a couple strops and still have some left.

That would probably be the cheapest option, IMHO

Sure but it is messy to apply. You can mix it with water, neatsfoot or whatever and make a paste. IIRC Chris sends directions for that with the powder. That is why the crayon from SRD is recommended, for ease of application. If you do powder wear a mask and gloves and with paste wear gloves. The powder is very fine and gets everywhere ..... probably not a great idea to breath it in.

OK, Made up my mind, I will go with the crayon from SRD.

However, I still wana know what Grit or Micron to use if i get a stone for keeping a great edge. Was thinking a 1 micron or .92 would do since diamond paste is rated at .25. I already own a DMT EEF 3 micron / 8000 mesh plate. whats the grit on a barber hone?

I'm not sure what you mean by "too much angle into the strop", but you must always keep the spine in contact with the strop. To lift the spine off the strop will dull the edge. Does the spine need to be perpendicular to the long axis of the strop? Not necessarily, but it seems to work most easily with that relationship.

I bought a balsa wood strop coated with CrOx from a forum member a while back. I like it b/c I didn't have to convert a hanging strop component into a pasted strop, and b/c stropping on a hard surface you're less likely to damage the blade with poor stropping technique. I would search out something like that...

I used the diamond spray on the felt pad that comes with the SRD modular paddle strop recently to achieve a better edge on my Wacker and my TI. It worked like a charm on both str8 razors.

Don't apply the diamond spray too heavily, though. Additionally, you only need to strop the razor on the sprayed felt 10-15 times. See if that works. If not, then perhaps 5 more.

I hear that chromium oxide is good too, although I haven't tried that method yet.

jhenry, you should get some chrome ox and give it a whirl. It is really good for making an edge that feels harsh feel smooth. Especially if you have the modular paddle. It is another arrow in the quiver that you may find is just the thing in a particular situation. I don't use it regularly but when I feel I need it I am glad to have it.

Pasting a strop is not as well suited to restore
an edge as it is for making a new harsh edge smooth.

There are activities for different ends of the trip as it
were.

To restore an edge use a method that keeps the
line of the bevel intact. This would be a fine hone
of any type 8K or finer. Balsa hones, with diamond
paste, CrOx may also meet this need. A light trip
over a barber hone can also get the job done.

To maintain an edge a light dusting of CrOx or
even 0.25 micron diamond on the canvas or felt
works for some as it continuously polishes and
smooths the edge. Too much and it rounds
the edge making it harder to bring back.

If money was not an issue I would recommend
a fast cutting fine modern water stone like the
Naniwa Super Stone 12,000 instead of
a barber hone. Properly lapped a SS12K can
bring a working shaver back to prime perhaps forever.
i.e. I like my SS12K for this, your solution may differ.
