clean and sterile or is it???

Newbie here just looking to sanitize my newly purchased razor . The inside of the scales need cleaning , there's crud inside the scales ( Yucky!!):thinking:. I would like to find some good ways to sterilize the whole razor blade and scales with out messing up the delicate scales.

What I do is use Scrubbing Bubbles. I bought the pump spray bottle and poured it into a rubbermaid container. I drop the razor in for a few minutes. This softens up the gunk and I use Q-tips which I have flattened the ends on (with a hammer) to reach in and scrub the gunk out. Dental floss works well around the pins.

I do fairly much what JimmyHAD does, except I use dish washing soap and no pump. You can create your own variation. You'll be amazed what soap and water can accomplish.

I agree, soap and water is a wonderful combination for getting things clean. Just dry all the parts well when your razaor is done with its bath and you should be good to go.

I forgot to mention a soft toothbrush is also part of my cleaning kit. ;)

Soap and water is good, and you can use barbicide on the blade if you want. I've used Dettol a couple of times as its a non aggressive disinfectant and works very well. You can use it on cuts and stuff, so I figure its safe to use on a razor..!

+1 on what has been said before. Q-tips, toothbrushes, floss, toothpicks, little squares of (dish)cloth all make great tools.

Also, consider oiling the blade after washing since soaps will remove previous oilings.

This sounds like good advice, except.... I'm new, so I am sure I am just being overcautious, but doesn't submerging a blade in water pose a big risk of rust? If not, how doe you make sure that it's dry in and around the pivot when you're done cleaning it?

After drying, use something like Tuf Glide [sic], which penetrates very well, or Ballistol, which also penetrates and oils. The former is weird chemicals; the latter is mostly mineral oil, but also has other ingredients that make it emulsify in water and leave an oil deposit when the water evaporates.
