I bought a natural sea sponge at Walmart. It's about 2" thick & 6" in diameter. It works finefor me. I don't know that natural is necessarily better than synthetic, but it's softer than synthetic and didn't have the funky smell that so many synthetics have.
I've been looking for a cool sponge as well, but I've had trouble finding something my wife would not use for cleaning dishes with... No matter how well I hide it...
I would recommend a micro fibre cloth. Much better cleaning characteristics, and will usually absorb water better.
The real question is "Are you sponge-worthy?":)
Only 5 shaves in to str8 shaving but I'm finding a folded face cloth on the edge of the wash basin works well.
Good idea. I use microfiber cloths to clean my spectacles, and they work great for that. What do you do about all the lather & stubble? I tried using very old and very soft cloth baby diapers. They worked fine for cleaning the blade, but I found that they became really messy after a while with the lather & stubble. I had to keep searching for a "clean spot", disrupting the "flow" of my shave. Maybe its because I've only been using a str8 for 3 weeks and am just learning how to control my workspace. OR... maybe I'm just dense in the head!
I'll have to admit, I do think the sponge with the foam and the stubble looks cool.
My sister details cars professionally - mainly Mercedes, BMW, Porsche, etc. and says deep water sea sponges are one of the safest things too use when washing your car. I don't know if this necessarily translates to straight razor care, but I figured it should be safe.
Since I'm almost blind without my glasses, anything that gets my blade away from the faucet, be it microfiber, diaper, or sponge, is probably a good thing:).

Gentlemen:
I go along with Robin's suggestion on the micro fiber cloth. I use that and it works quite well. I have used a sponge as well in the past, and that works, too. You can get those from the household cleaner department of any department store. You might also try a bigger sponge used for washing cars, available in the automotive section of department stores. All that considered, I still opt for fiber cloth.

I have been wiping my blade off and drying it at the end of my shave and rinsing it off under water in between every few strokes. Is there a problem just rinsing the blade under water during the shave to remove cream/stubble?
I thought about a sea sponge..but..my blade is a hefty and wide 7/8. I think something puffy big and rounded would help..I keep seeing o cello sponges but..hmmm..are they wipe worthy...all I have to do is fill this shave gap..I already ordered my black shaving scuttle (moss) from SRD...great prices with quality products including my black 3" latigo strop..will post when I get everything ;-)
I think you are over thinking this.
Wipe on your shirt
wipe on your arm
wipe on some toilet paper
wipe on a towel
wipe on a cow
wipe on a sham wow
umm...with the last comment..just add the words slice/scrape/cut/nick/scratch/tear to each of yer suggestions..really?..and yes I will be wiping my blade on surface of my bathroom counter top which is porcelain
Ummm,
I just wipe the blade off between thumb and forefinger and then wipe my fingers on a towel. I haven't dinged a finger yet.
There really shouldn't be any risk of "slice/scrape/cut/nick/scratch/tear" when wiping the blade, as anyone who has gotten this far with their shave has likely already figured out the difference between the directions for stropping vs shaving.
There is a pic of a guys finger than required 4-6 stitches..no way in hell im gonna put my blade to my fingers..gimme a break!..yea I do wipe of a little cream very lightly but I try to avoid doing this
I use basic white facecloths.
Why white? So I can bleach the heck out of them to ensure they are clean.
How do yyou clean goop, stubble and bio-load from a sponge?
Ok will give a yella sham wow sponge a try as I found plenty of clean ones..will update in a few days
lol @ cheesegrader face! ;-p
It should!..white tiles n black shaving gear :-). ..hint of yella would be interesting.
where can a microfiber towel be purchased?
I like to use towels that I can wash and reuse for most household duties rather than paper towels. In the den however i take a length of toilet paper and lay it out on the sink top and wipe my razor on that, then toss it in the trash when finished.
I dont rinse my razor to help preserve the edge quality. only wiping; clean strop dry and sometimes oil-usually i use a strip of silicon cloth.
