Not likely. The size of the nicks one gets are only the type you would get from a modern razor. If anybody has ended up in the ER, it was from handling the razor poorly rather than shaving with it.
i've driven an 11inch chef's knife through the palm of my hand.. but never cut myself shaving anything worse than a small nick.
About the 5th shave I cut myself on the right side of the corner of my mouth and though I didn't have to go to the emergency room it took probably about 20 minutes of big time pressure to stop the bleeding. It left a nice scar to remind be to be more careful.

A split second of inattention and I had a slice to the bone on the top of my thumb, 5 stitches to close it up...
I have had three pretty good cuts from restoring/honing razors only the one on the thumb required stitches....

When I do cut myself it is usually from inattention more than anything and usually not so bad. Most of that is from hand sanding.
i was working in an open kitchen where customers can look over and watch you cook.. a bubbly brunette started talking to me and said something that took my attention away.. for some odd reason i tried to slice open a bagel while it was still in my hand instead of placing in flat on the board.. all while using the wrong knife and not even looking at what i was doing.. i severed 3 tendons and caused some serious nerve damage.Quote:

Please tell me I'm not the only person here who keeps a suture pack at his house. Nothing with a razor yet, but close in a situation with my first spike point and some vicodin and lack of sleep from a tooth problem. I do have an interesting deal with a snow cone machine.

My bro-in-law (does anyone have a bro-in-law who is not an idiot?) has an odd habit. Any time he has to do any kind of job involving risk, he dials 9-1 on his cordless handset -- working in the crawlspace for example. My worst cut was also on my thumb. It's not a good idea to admire my handiwork while shaving. I did this, and my hands came close together.The left hand was holding a very keen razor, and it found the tip of my right thumb. They net somewhere in the middle, and my right thumb bled a lot. It took me a while to control the bleeding, but the ER was never a real option.
It's a good idea to prepare for all eventualities, but I doubt if most of us will ever wound himself so badly that we will need to go the ER.

Theres super glue on a couple of fingers at the moment from catching a falling razor I decided to admire early in the AM.. least I caught it tho, fingers heal - steel doesn't.Quote:

The worst I got was from a razor I was cleaning with MAAS. I caught the end of my thumb and it took about 45 minutes to stop the bleeding. In the end I glued the cut shut with superglue..!

Not yet. But I've had to use my knowledge from the Basic Medic Course and superglue once.

Not yet, but I have a good related story about three boys who were born as a result of a serious wound. No, seriously!
About 20 years ago, a good friend of mine who was/is a fine custom woodworker was doing something with one of those Japanese hand saws in his basement woodshop when he cut the fleshy part of his palm very deeply. As he roomed in a cruddy old house sort of commune style with several others, his best friend/roomie took him to the ER, where a rather comely young woman was also waiting on someone she'd brought in. Long story short, they hit it off, and soon she was one of the "roomies." They got married, and had three sons, all because his friend got cut. This story always amazes me in the way it captures the utter serendipitous nature of the lives we try to carefully plan...
Ha ha.. I'm actually stocking my shop with clotting agent (granules) and wound dressings with clotting agent in them like the combat bandages/sponges. But this is more for shop work. I've never had a really bad cut shaving, but the shop can be bad with all of the table saw-buffer- etc can really make for a bad injuryQuote:

But, I hate visiting the ER because of the co-pay and hellish wait. So, I grabbed a tube of superglue and went to work. Anyhoo, the ER no, but when shaving, and paying not a great deal of attention, i moved the razor back too far at my sideburn and sliced right down the front of my ear, luckily thanks to the sig of a wiseman here I had a light grip and so it flexed slicing the front as opposed to through, but man there was blood galore.

I should have as well, got my first dovo special re honed after i chipped it and when i got it back i dropped it and first reaction was to save it which i did and got a huge gash in my first finger. Bleeding wouldnt stop for awhile and should have got stitches but had no insurance , whatcha going to do? But ill never do that again
I don't think I have bled any more learning how to shave from the old Gillette when I was 16 than I have now... Well.... maybe a little more..LOL
So far not with a traditional straight. But I got in too much of a hurry one morning with a shavette-style razor and gave myself a deep cut on my index finger when moving it toward the sink to rinse it. Off to the local ER I went. Doh!
Yes. (Actually I went to a walk-in clinic because it's faster and less of a hassle than the ER.) I was moving my free hand down and it ran into the hand with the straight razor and cut my thumb down to the tendon. I couldn't stop the bleeding for 30 minutes so I knew I couldn't avoid getting treatment. It required 4 stitches and took about 10-12 days to heal. When you are concentrating so hard you have tunnel vision and there's a tendency forget what the rest of you is doing. But there was no way I was going to quit learning the straight after the blood equity I had invested. :rant:Quote:

Another story not involving a straight razor. Many years ago (mid 80's) I was carving a jack-o-lantern with my girlfriend at the time; this was years before the much more user-friendly, harmless little pumpkin-carving saw kits came out. Trying to be a know-it-all with my scary-sharp Case Shark Tooth knife (still the best knife I have), I was "demonstrating knife safety" to her when the point slipped through the outer flesh of the pumpkin and cut my finger down to the bone. After 45 minutes of trying in vain to stop the very profuse bleeding, we had to go to the ER for some suturing.
I got up early the next morning to go deer-hunting with my bandaged trigger finger. Oh, to be 20 again!
