Hello, my name is Weston Tyler and I have recently (within the last couple of months) become interested in using Straight razors. I could use some advice on what type of razor and other equipment to get, and just how to get started in general. I am a 21 year old college student so I'm on a pretty tight budget. If you have any suggestions I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks!
Welcome to SRP Weston. The first thing I would suggest you do, if you haven't already, is go to the link in my sig line for the SRP Wiki. Check out the beginner's guide and especially the 'razors to avoid' list. Whatever you do don't buy a used razor in an antique shop or flea market ..... ebay, until you have an idea of what to look out for in terms of condition and brand. Ask any questions as you have them and members will be more than willing to help out. :gl:

Make sure to check out the classifieds...nice shave-ready razors are up there almost daily and can be had for a song and dance. Budget strops can be had for as low as $20 and a brush and soap are about $10.
IMHO i would buy things 1 at a time if you can wait that long. Buy a strop one pay day, buy a brush the next and so on. That way you wont be hard strapped for cash and you wont get the cheapest things out there. I dont recomend buying the best yet either until you have made a firm and final decision that you truly want to shave with a straight. This decision came for me after i had a couple of months of shaving with one. WHILE you are waiting to amass your accoutrments, read every thing that you can in the Wiki and other posts from other beginers and members. When its time to purchase your actual razor, get one from the classified section on here, they all come ready to shave, that in and of itself will be a big jump on the learning curve.

Just remember RAD doesn't dicscriminate whether you are a college student, new parent, unemployed or just plain broke. Resist the urge at first. I am all of the above and it hit me hard.
Seriously these guys are all great and i couldn't have done any of this with out them. Welcome and enjoy.
But heed the warning well. Or your signing bonus check from your first big career will end up in the pockets of some custom razor maker:).

I'd go for the highest quality you can afford. For something as luxurious and gratifying as shaving yourself with a str8, the added feeling of quality will add to your experience and the meaning you give it.
