Spending...is this normal???

I am only one month in from my first straight razor shave and I have already acquired two brushes, three soaps, one cream, two after shaves, two strops, a barber hone, two mugs, one scuttle and four razors. :thinking:

I just purchased the Boker Edelweiss on SRD reduced to $112. I figured I could not pass that up given the positive feedback on here about that particular razor!

Is this normal to get this obsessed? I think at this point I am set with my gear and I will truly concentrate on perfecting my prep and technique. :D

Welcome to the beginning of the end. You can talk to me when you have conned the student loan manager to include a custom razor into your loans at 1.5% interest delayed for 6 years. Unless you are a student loan manager than Robert Williams makes custom computers!

Yep....it's normal. It's just that the hobby has soooo many facets. Vintage guys like the history, luxury guys like the quality stuff coming from Solingen, those with knife sharpening backgrounds like a challenge.

It's an affordable luxury. I mean, in comparison even to collecting fountain pens, straight razors are very reasonably priced. A new Montegrappa costs what, $700 these days? You can get the best Solingen has to offer for about $300...or you can get the middle of the lines for under $150. Soaps are easy to try since they're $10-$30.

If you really intend to live up to that "set with my gear" statement, whatever you do, DO NOT look at Shave of the Day. What baby sees, baby wants.

If by "normal" you mean that you are like the rest of us, yes you're totally normal. Outside of SRP, one might debate...

When I started all I wanted was one or two razors, a strop, a brush and a puck of soap. Then I wanted to learn to hone, so obviously I needed some hones and a razor or two to practice on....

I currently have a growing collection of razors (and no sign of slowing down), three strops including one I made myself, a couple of sets of hones, some natural finishers, enough soaps and creams to wash an entire garrison, a Dremel plus about a million attachments and my watch list on eBay hasnt been below double figures in months..!

And thats a tame AD by the standards of some of the gents around here..! :D

The only thing I didnt get an AD for is brushes, and I'm sure that'll only be a matter of time lol!

Yeah, the AD's are perfectly normal. :D Dont fight them, instead embrace and enjoy them..!

Yes, your behavior is both obsessive and normal. All you can think about is your next shave and your next razor. You're at the beginning stages of a lifelong addiction. But there is hope. With time, it will only get..... worse.

Okay, thank you, thank you. I feel better now. I certainly did not think I was getting into this to save money. I read that little thing in the wiki about the cost of disposable razors and how SR shaving saves you money. :roflmao

I will not look at SOTD for at least another two weeks! That is what started my spending spree...haha!!! I have only purchased a barber's hone, so I'm sure a full set of stones is on the horizon. Oh boy!

I guess it depends on what you think is normal. I have been at this for several years, and my list of items is:

six vintage razors
one basic strop (illinois strop)
one badger brush
one lathering bowl (actually a small ramekin from target)
one brush stand
one razor case
one Norton 4000/8000 waterstone
one pasted bench strop

I picked up most of these in the first year or so.

I currently have five soaps, three aftershaves, witch hazel, and some home made preshave/cleansing oil. Since these are consumables, the number has and will continue to vary over time as I use them up.

Well that does not seem too bad. Is one 4000/8000 stone and a pasted strop enough to maintain a razor? I currently have one barber hone and a two sided pasted strop. Is a Norton 4000/8000 all I would need to keep my razor going?

As the other's have said, it is normal. Wait till you're hiding your habit from your wife though! :D

One member gave me some great & sound advice once. Never put your collection in one place. It looks far less obvious if you keep it scattered. Pile it up & you'll be in trouble!

Actually, I don't use the pasted strop anymore, the 4/8K (followed by a good stropping on my Illinois strop) is sufficient.

I feel so cheated, that's exactly why I have started looking into straight razors. :-P First I got one, then I wanted another...and another...

It's funny .... just after my first st8, I went on hunting for restoration material among old barbers and antique shops.... well, now I have 5 restored and my original, along with my Norton 4k/8k, soaps, creams, and so on.... I actually made a beautiful box to keep my babies safe from harm!!!!..... I agree with all on the "normal" side..... Good luck!!!!

Hmm normal. It has been 1.5 years and I still have not stopped. Don't know if there is an end.

I now have 4 razors (another 2 on order) and 3 strops :gth

Hmmmmmmm. I too have 4 razors but only one strop. Maybe it is time for me to come out of my brief retirement and do some strop shopping! :rock:

Yes, it's quite normal. In fact, imho you are somewhat behind the curve. Straight razor shaving can lead to all sorts of acquisition disorders. The acquisition of razors, brushes and soaps/creams is par for the course.

Welcome to the club chief. BTW...Did you say that SRD is having a monthly sale on the Boker Edleweiss? I must definitely look into that.
