The water is actually lukewarm. I feel the lukewarm water rinse provides a welcome stage for the alum, which I always run under cold water, to do its work. Now, about three or four minutes later, after the razor is dried, stopped, oiled and put away, and the brush cleaned, then comes the cold water, followed by a delightful rubdown with an ice cube. Witch hazel, balm and aftershave complete the routine. I know most gentlemen apply alum block after a cold rinse, and that's fine, but my method works better — for me.
