Hello All,

Hello All,

Well, You just post something like this, and someone with the "Mentor" tag will step up soon and volunteer... It's not really anything official, it's just a veteran member who everyone trusts that can field all your questions.
Until you get a mentor's ear, though, if you have any questions, I can help within my knowledge.
Anything on your mind just yet?
Welcome to the site.
Our mentors are more like general helpers, so they are not assigned to members. They are knowledgeable, friendly, and tend to answer lots of questions. Don't be afraid to send one a private message, if you'd like to. And if you post a question somewhere on the forum, you'll likely have answers from at least one mentor, not to mention lots of other members. We love when new guys join us, and we love to help them out.
I hope you enjoy your time here on the site and your shaving experiences at large.
I am thinking of going to classicshaving.com store front in Palm Springs, CA tomorrow to get started on buying items for this new adventure.
I've read some of the articles here at this site.
Thinking of getting a
Professionally Hand-Honed DOVO 6/8 Classic Straight Razor for
$97.99
Anyone have any thoughts on this?
Thanks
Welcome to SRP. Like holli4pirating stated, just ask and you will get answers, i guarantee it. The people here are very helpfull and giving with their knowledge and experience. Good luck and don't forget to read the Wiki. About the Dovo, if you have the money, then do it. Dont forget to purchase a strop, soap, brush and mug to go with that razor.
Thanks ShavedZombie. I feel I should buy a brand new and professionally honed straight from a storefront. They also do honing for $20. As I gain experience I can feel comfortable buying on the classifieds here.
For about $100.00 do you think it's a good deal?
Also, I see that the best blades are made from stainless steel whereas this model has high carbon steel. But, this is good enough for now, right?
Welcome welcome! You've already received some great advice... let me just add that if you have any specific questions that you can't find answers to, or that you feel may not warrant a new thread on the forum, feel free to send me a PM and I'll help out however I can.
Dave
How do I send you a PM?
You really can't go wrong on the classifieds if it says that it's shave ready... They are professionals here :D
Also, I think the Dovo's are great.. I started on one, but I sold it... I like vintage blades better.
Also, Carbon steel, stainless steel, doesn't really matter as long as it's shave ready
Welcome to SRP. Classic shaving is a good place to purchase your gear. For a strop (which you'll need) your first one should be inexpensive and if purchased from CS it should be fine. Odds are that you will slice it and/or nick it. After a few months you can get a better one if you wish. A brush and shave cream/soap is also helpful with straight shaving. A pure badger between 21 and 23mm knot will be on the less expensive end of the scale and will match up nicely with a shave soap. Save some money and pick up a cheap rice bowl, cat food dish or something of similar size to work up a lather. You can soak your brush in a regular coffee mug if you wish and makes a good scuttle in a sink full of hot water.
Good luck!
Welcome to SRP. You mean you can actually drive over to a Classic Shaving storefront and walk in ? Man, if I could do that my credit card balance would be maxed out in no time. That is a good razor you're looking at. Check out the beginner's guide in the link below for useful info on getting started. :gl:
Yes, I am fortunate enough that this store is about an hour's drive.
Guess I'm lucky and thanks for your thoughts.
If you want to send a PM (private message) to a member you can do it one of two ways.
1. If you see a post by that member, you can click his/her username at the side of the post and several options will come up, one of which is to send a PM and you should be able to figure it out from there.
2. In the upper right hand corner of the forum page, there is an area that says Welcome, (your username) and two lines below that is a line that reads "Your Notifications." Click on that and it will open your PM box and you can navigate around in that to send a message. If you start typing out the username of a member, it will start to autofill various usernames. This makes it easier to find the username in case you don't quite remember how to spell it.
If that's not enough info about PMing, just ask again.
Thanks Utopian,
I guess I'm a little afraid of cutting myself. I suppose this is natural. Do you have any ideas on exactly how I should hold and use the blade? I think they will also help me at the store tomorrow.
The wiki will be your hero 99/100 times.
First straight razor shave - Straight Razor Place Wiki
That should help you get started... there are also articles on what you need to get started, and tons of other great things. It functions just like Wikipedia, so it's very intuitive and userfriendly, just full of more interesting things
+1 on what the zombie has to say.. just make sure it's shave ready.. you can get a great razor for as little $40.. there is always time to buy the newest flashiest thing out there.. i've also heard it said that you'd want to go cheaper on a strop as the chances are you'll end up cutting the business out of it anyway.
Thanks, I just re read and printed the article on first straight razor shave.
Hello vthomlinson, Where can I get a great razor for $40.00
I just got a message for a PM but my pop up blocker wouldn't allow me to open it. I'm on a Mac with Safari.
Dovo makes a great razor, no question about it. However, as good as they are, many members including myself, have expressed the opinion that the newly manufactured blades don't hold up to the vintage ones. This is one reason that I would go with the classifieds. Many will come pre-honed and have been broken in for you. Whatever you decide, good luck and welcome!
Hey July10, I sent you a PM. Depending on how 'Southern CA' you are, you might want to come up to the Fresno area in early August for our get together. If you haven't found the razor of your dreams by then, we'll hunt you down a couple good examples and show you how to hone them up for a shave.
There ae actually a few razors up in the classifieds, shave ready for 30 and 25$, and they'll shave you just as well as the Dovo, even if they aren't quite so "new" and "shiny"
Cheers,
Jeremy
Several people have tried to PM me and I appreciate it. My computer has some kind of block against pop ups so I can't read any pm's. Is there another way on this site to access pm's that have been sent?
Thanks everyone,
I followed your instructions and have opened and replied to pms.
Did anyone receive my pm reply?
if you're still looking for good razors and really good starter strops, head on over to RupRazor - Home. the filly strop is what i use and its perfect for $20 (shipping included in the $20).
Here is my first shaving video, maybe it'll help.

So, did you go to classicshaving?
If I do an hour drive I'll definitely buy the stuff there since you can see it in person (not that you can tell anything meaningless from that since you have no experience whatsoever, but you can hold it in your hand see how it feels and looks).
Of course, you can get better razors/deals, but I don't think it's terribly important, do what you're comfortable with.
I am going tomorrow to the store. It should be fun and interesting.
You should not have to worry about getting a "new"razor . Before I found this site I bought a basic Dovo that was supposedly shave ready. After letting Lynn (founder of this site) at it, I finally know what shave ready is. I also bought a razor from the classifieds and it came shave ready and disinfected. Don't worry about it. The members here take really good care of us newbies. Don't be afraid to ask. There are no silly questions.
Have fun and welcome aboard !
