Vintage Straight Advice
Hi everyone!
I went to a couple of local antique shops today and found a few
straights that I am interested in. However, I am extremely
inexperienced when it comes to buying vintage straights. Here are some
photos of the razors. They're not great, but all I had was my camera phone. I understand if they are not good enough quality for you to make a judgment, but I thought I'd ask.
The first one is a Tonsorial Gem with celuloid scales and a slip case for $35.

The other is a Solingen for $22.

They both look nice! Any damage to the edges that we can't see in the pics?

Yep...looks like you found the watering hole in Exeter!
That Tonsorial is a nice razor, but I've passed on it in the past because of the price. A bit too steep for my tastes. The second razor with the fancy scales is a razor that's had about 3/4 of an inch chopped off the end of the razor. I assume that it had a crack and someone reground the end off to keep it usable...I'd pass on that one. The EEMos is a great shaver and the price is in order for our area.
Give me a call on Sunday and I'll take another look at that Tonsorial to make sure that it's square and not warped. I'll give it a hone up for ya too :)

Thanks Justin! I'll give you a call.

I pulled the trigger on the EE Mos. Red96sta came through with some solid advice, an on the spot hone, and some good conversation.
I'm ready and excited to give this a try tonight! It will be my first straight shave. I know that they say not to try this during the week, but I'm throwing caution to the wind. I've been waiting long enough. Wish me luck!

I like a quote I once read that "luck is when preparation meets opportunity." :) Read Lynn's recommendations for the first straight razor shaves here. :gl:

Great quote, Jimmy. Thanks!
