I use short smooth strokes, and dont go too fast. Down that route lies cuts and blood loss! See the vidoes in the videos forum for correct shaving strokes.
These blades are very sharp and thats what gives them their cutting power, not the speed you move them at. Its a razor, not a lawnmower blade..! :)
If your razor isnt removing hair it'll be because your technique is poor or the blade is not shave ready. DONT just move the blade faster! You'll almost certainly cut yourself.
When I use a straight I don't do anything fast. Depending on the area I may use long or short strokes but probably the longest stroke I use is on my neck.
Hello, gull:
I do nothing fast when shaving with the straight razor. I take my time and shave with care. Most of my strokes are short. In some places, however, they are a bit longer. Most of all, I do not force the blade and keep the pressure light.

Obie
Personally, I use long pivoting (what many call scything) on the larger surfaces and shorter strokes on the small surfaces. Quick or slow makes no difference other than what you are comfortable with. Actually thats true of the long or short part as well. Do what come natural to you.
Short and methodical.
I don't do anything quick. Short smooth, or long smooth strokes. Don't worry about the lather drying out, just gob on some more. My second pass is a bit faster than the first, but I still would not call it "quick".
Straight razors are not for winning a race, it is for a good shave and to relax and enjoy life.:beer2:
I tried a quicker stroke today and it didn't seem to make much of a difference...if any. Back to slow strokes I guess, thanks for the responses! :beer2:
What worked best for me so far have been short, smooth strokes. Like the others have already said, I don't do anything quick. Happy shaving!
gull,
Short, smooth strokes work best for me :)
Have fun !
Best regards

i've often questioned myself.. but i am comfortable with long smooth strokes.. and it seems as if i'm a bit quicker with my shaves than others on the board describe.. i'm by no means reckless.. but i position my blade where i want to start and without hesitation i glide it down the path i've decided on.. then quickly repeat the same thing on my next area to be shaved.. i've equated it to mowing grass or vacuuming a carpet..
I love to think about each stroke. It's ten-20 minutes of my day where everything slows down, and I have the bathroom all to myself....it's so quiet in there.
Short, methodical strokes. Lots of stretching, and thinking about where I'm going to place the blade next.
The second pass is with slightly longer strokes.
Enjoy it!
Like the best delivery of good news....short and sweet.
The question is small quick stokes, small slow strokes or long slow strokes ?
Well, this guy`s answer is LONG FAST strokes

Speed kills! Besides, what's the rush? This is YOUR time to relax, shave and enjoy it. Pamper yourself, take your time even if it means getting up a few minutes earlier.
I turn on the radio, work up a good shave lather, brush it on and massage the beard, strop the razor while the beard softens, and then mow it down slowly.
Sublime.

I find that there is a minimum speed required. This is where the 'smooth' strokes described come in. If you go very slow, the razor will sink into your skin. ("He who hesitates is cut.") Beyond that, there is no advantage to speed.
The most important things are a sharp razor, lubricating lather and a light and careful touch.
