1-Day, 2-Shaves, Straight Only!

Pretty excited today, had a few firsts.

I finally got to try out my new Barber's Hone I got from gssixgun. I hit it with some lather and was surprised to see how initially difficult it was to keep the blade, light and in full contact with the hone. By the 4th or 5th lap I was starting to get a nice feel for it. After that I gave it 50 laps on the Filly and I believe it looked and felt sharper.

I have been watching the Chimensch's 30th Anniversary Straight Razor Shaving Video. This morning was the first time I tried the sponge and the first thing I did was cut a huge 2 inch slice into it... Watch how he used that sponge not as easy as it looks.

OK on to the shaves:

Had my first Lawson-esk 2 straight shaves today. I decided to give myself a single with the grain shave and not clean up with the DE. I didn't want to rush so I shaved right through breakfast. After the save I remarked to my wife that I missed a spot here and there. She informed me that I hand't missed any spots... I had missed entire areas! I was out of time and no problem. I was pretty happy with my Straight razor only shave. Sure it wasn't pretty but it sure was satisfying.

I decided I would give it a second "clean up" pass after work. This pass was to get the areas that I had completely missed as well as trying to get closer over all. After the second pass I have to say it's a pretty acceptable straight razor only shave.

congrats! Sometimes it feels quite daunting learning the straight for me. I know a full shave without cleanup is a great feeling!! My barber hone from glen is still staring at me:P I have some time though before it needs honed I hope.

I like the idea that lawsonstone came up with by having two single passes in one day...it increases your learning curve. When I started, I went cold turkey on all of my other shaving methods....no cleaning up with your other method. Having to rely solely on your straight will also increase your learning.

Congrats, Shoki! I am still new at this myself. I took the approach red96ta did; no clean ups afterwards. Leaves the face a bit rough in the beginning but I do think it helps speed up the learning process using the straight only.

I have yet to use anything other than my SRD latigo strop for sharpening. Sounds like you are getting some good results with your barber's hone. I need to look into getting one.
