So I have been looking around on the site and it says that 6/8's half hollow is your best bet for your first razor but I'm having difficulty finding one that fits that criteria that isn't brand new. What are the disadvantages to a thinner possibly full hollow razor when starting out?
Hi Robin, Well, that is a good question!! A 6/8 1/2 hollow does have some good traits for the beginner. It"s a little heavier, and that will give you somewhat better control. The edge won"t be as delicate as a full hollow ground, and when shavivg sharpe, will seem to give a smoother shave. It will be a little tight on the upper lip, but you will get around that. But, when it comes right down to it, just get a GOOD razor. If you want to go vintage, Dorco, C Mon, Boker, Wade and Butcher, and many more brands will serve with honors. If you want to go new,Boker, Dovo or C Mon are excellent choices. If you can"t decide, draw straws, as all of the above are excellent choices. Wildhog has given you probably some of the best starting information I have seen in a while. Getting a good quality razor is the best choice you can make at this point 5/8 or 6/8 give little difference in the size category, therefore if you can find a 5/8 that looks good you will not be disappointed. I do not know how much reading you have been doing, however please read the Wiki from the above link on shaving and razors. Take your time when you get your razor and you will have a good experience.
Make sure it is professionally honed before you use it.
I think I will most likely end up buying out of the classifieds on here so hopefully the honing part should not be an issue.
