How long do YOU lather?
I like to lather for a minute or two before shaving but more often than not I just lather strop and shave
+1 on that. Word for word. I don't screw around too much. Essentially it will depend on the individual. What works for me (and obviously Kalgoorlieboi) may not be right for you. You may need a longer prep, but any shorter may lead to a less enjoyable shaving experience.

I usually lather until I am done. Then I shave.
A quick lather-up, if you're in a hurry, is OK...but it
certainly isn't optimal. I don't always take the time
either, but my best shaves go like this:
1. Wash your face/shower...whatever it takes to get
your face clean and "ready' for a shave
2. Apply lather (prepared lather/facial lather)
3. Rub it into your beard for a minute or two
4. Rinse it off, and re-apply a moist lather
5. Strop your razor...25 linen/50 leather
6. Rinse it off and re-apply lather
7. Strop the razor another 25 laps on the leather and
let the lather work it's magic
8. Shave WTG, entire face
9. Rinse and re-apply lather
10. Strop razor 10 linen/25 leather
11. Shave XTG, rinse
12. Re-apply lather, strop 10/25
13. Shave ATG, with low angle, very light pressure
14. Rinse
15. Dry face, wait a few moments (clean up the shave
area, clean your brush and bowl)
16. Apply AS balm/AS lotion
17. Smile, and say thanks for another good shave.
In other words, "Take your time".
Life is good!

ps: give the razor 10/25 on the strop and a light coat
of oil before putting it away.
I like to use a three min. egg timer if I am not hot out
of the shower.
From a dry face.
I start the timer with a splash of clear water on my face
and whiskers. At least one more splash 30 seconds
later.
Then begin working on a lather.
I find that if I do not let my whiskers soak the full
three min my shave suffers.
I do like to work the lather on my face with a brush to finish it
before applying a blade.
jcsixx,
Wash face.
Apply lather to face; rub in for about 30 - 60 sec, until the lather starts to dry out.
Relather with brush for about a minute.
Strop razor then shave.
Have fun !
Best regards
Russ
I lather up, get the towel out and placed strategically, gently slide the razor under the lather and over the skin, then do it again.
If you whip your cream or your soap in your bowl or scuttle without any added water (just what's left in your brush) for about 30 seconds or so, and then add a tiny bit of water (< 1 tsp) to the base you've built up, you'll notice an 'explosion' of lather somewhere around the 30-40 second mark. If you don't get this rapid, thick foaming, then incrementally add drops of water and keep whipping.
1 min - 1min 10 sec is all it really takes for a good lather, I'm not looking for an arm workout before I shave...
I strop my blade, shower, and the last 2 or 3 minutes in the shower I lather up. Then I dry off (except for the lather of course) and shave.
