My daily shave ritual with a Dovo Shavette has become very popular with my family. They're pretty bored by the pre-shave preparation and the application of the lather and all that, but when they hear me pick up the razor, usually closely followed by some serious cussing, they rush to the bloodroom, sorry, bathroom to watch the ensuing fun. Their favorite parts are the first few good nicks, the screams following the application of the Styptic pencil, and they're starting to develop an under and over line through Las Vegas on how many cuts I'll self-inflict. They've really gotten a little bloodthirsty about it lately, chanting loudly "One more pass, one more pass" and "Go against the grain, daddy, go against the grain". They really like for me to get a close shave, and I think it's cute the way they tell me to go for six passes, the last three against the grain. It's nice to know that they enjoy my daily ritual. I just wish they'd help me clean up the blood, but they don't seem much interested in that.

Switch to a real straight and the blood should slow down.

Sorry about the bloodfest, I've been there in times past. Healing between shaves becomes the real bugaboo, I use a couple of different types of Shavettes from time to time. Here's some basic advice, 1-Keep the bloody thing FLAT against face, raising the back[spine] of the Shavette just enough to hear that slight "knife scraping against toast" sound, no higher. B : Don't "Grip" the razor, hold it just enough to control it but still loosely enough to feel a nick comeing on before it becomes a slice!! Then just back off and start your pass again. And another thing : Lose the audience, you need to concentrate, without the cheering section. Keep your elbow on the high side and coordinate you strokes with you breathing, like your pull a trigger for a long rifle shot[200 meters or longer.

Aside from that, have you thought about a good Merkur 34C
Heavey duty DE razor?? Just another thought.

Thanks for the tip. Actually, I think about my Merkur 34C all the time. I even reach over and caress it sometimes while I'm hacking at my face with the Shavette.

But your tip was exactly what I tried yesterday and today. I was having a deuce of a time finding the "angle". I had even been told here to go beyond 30 degrees to even 45 degrees or even vertical. That wasn't working. The razor would stop on something, I'd push on, and, well, you know the rest. I did start flat today and brought the spine up until I could tell that I was shaving and not just sliding on the spine, hearing that "knife on toast" sound you describe. That was the first time I felt I had any feel for this thing.

you could try a slight slicing motion too as you make your pass, it helps make it smoother and reduses drag that causes the razor to skip and subsequently nick. not too much though, about a 1 to 3 ratio or less for slice vs. pass. My bath towels still have blood on them, and I stopped the self mutilation a couple moths ago; good reminder to be careful:)
