Going to try a straight razor.

I have been reading some here and other sites online. I want to try it and I am sure I will like it. I have had familiy ask why I want to do it since its sooo dangerous (this is what they think anyway) and I say "Well I don't know exactly. There is just something about that intrigues me."

I recently started shaving my whole head also and hoped to get good enought to staright my nog. I have read here that some are against it and few do it.

I also found out that both of my grandpas used a straight and my dad still has his dads. Maybe he can find it for me.

I plan to buy a razor from one of the guys on this site because I saw recently a bunch have been put up for sale Shave Ready.

My question is what is a good starter blade? Like size? Round or square? Brand?

I plan to buy that starter kit from Tony if I can figure out what his site is.

I just ordered some of the Dragons Blood soap from mama bear (think thats the spelling) but may get some more also to test out.

Welcome to the group Larry.

I started with a 5/8 round point. Brand doesn't matter so long as it isn't Pakistani manufacture. Blades made in Sweden, Germany, France & England are all good.

I bought a starter set from Tony to help me get going and I don't think you can go wrong with it at all. I'd recommend the paddle strop starter set over the hanging strop starter set because, if you get some pastes on it, it can perform the function of a normal strop as well as be used for refreshing a blade when it gets dull.

If you're looking for more razors, Lynn just put up a bunch for sale. Since they're coming from lynn, you can be assured they're quality product and will have a super sharp edge on them. you can check it out at this thread

As for being dangerous, well, there's nothing to fear but fear itself. The blade won't but unless you're afraid of it, so relax, take your time and I'm sure you'll be enjoying it in no time.

I was thinking of getting the strop from Tony but I am kinda wanting to get a razor from one of the guys on the forum. I get a nice presharpend blade and the person makes a bit of money. I will email tony and see what he suggests for a good strop.

I can gladly do the sets minus the razor so you can buy from any of the fine guys mentioned here. Lynn, Bill, Joe, etc..... all have excellent razor choices in a variety of prices and of course all are shave ready just like mine.

I would start with a hanging strop first. Yes you can keep a razor keen with the pasted strop and use it for daily use. The hanging strop is just a lot easier to learn and use for your regular every day stropping.

I can definitely vouch for Joe's razors and Tony's strops. Half my razors are from Joe. I have one from Tony, 2 from Gary, one from Vlad (a restoral he didn't have time to get around to so I took it on) and 2 from eBay. I have six from Joe. They all shave like lightsabers.

Tony's strops are excellent, I have 2 hanging and a paddle strop. And a couple of Vlad's boxes. And several creams and soaps. And... well you get the idea.

Be prepared when you start this, because your checkbook is going to take a hit. You won't be able to stop at just one (speaking from personal experience).
