Lather Practice and best shave.

I just bought a cheap brush soap set from Rite aid to practice:gl: my lather building in preparation for my first straight razor kit ill be buying soon.
The entire kit i bought was $8 so its no luxury set.
Im impressed with how well this inexpensive stuff lathers.

How big a difference does a badger brush make compared to a boar brush?

I look forward to making lather with badger brush and SRD soap.

I really love this site/forums. Just using the techniques ive read since being here has dramatically improved my current shaving situation. I moved from shower shave to sink shave started using lather from soap/brush and started pulling the skin etc. I have to say today was the most enjoyable shave of my life.

I have enjoyed slowing down to enjoy the process of getting smooth skin.

The badger brushes are much softer, and so easier to lather with especially once you get to putting it on your face as it will build a better lather whereas the boar seems to just push it around and irritate the face. Proraso is a great soap that's pretty inexpensive, and builds a really nice lather compared to a few of the other cheaper brands I've tried. Welcome aboard and good luck!

I am in the minority on this, here on this forum-- but, I actually prefer using my boar brush most of the time. I still break out the badger now and then, but I just love my Omega boar so much!

It's amazing how if you take the time to do something right, how much more enjoyable it becomes. I have gotten a few fellas at work to make the switch to brush and soap, one of whom started using a DE this week (I think he'll eventually go straight). Every one of them has seen an improvement, and you will too. Welcome to a whole new world.

I also like my boars but especially when I face lather. Producing lather directly on my face is easier for me using a boar brush than with a badger. If I lather in a scuttle it's the other way aroung. For me. Your milage may obviously vary.

@Lane I noticed how the stiff low quality boar brush I have does just push the lather around. I have notice no face irritation since using it. I have heard good things about proraso, I will definitely give it a try. I'm intrigued with Al's shaving cream also. I cant believe how much lather comes from just a dab!

@Chay I have a few friends intrigued by it while at the same time they think im crazy. Just getting the best shave ive ever had was worth it and more to come.

It could just be the quality of boar brush I tried also, the cheap kind from walgreens. Whatever soap you do buy though be sure to invest in something good. It will likely last you many months and it makes all the difference in the world to your shave.

I bought the same Rite-Aid brush kit for my son's Christmas Present. Same idea in that it would be a starter kit and he could get fancier later.

My Badger Brush was getting pretty tired and I needed a new one. I went out on a limb and bought the Omega Professional Boar Brush from Amazon. It was $15 delivered. It received the same treatment as the Rite-Aid brush. I soaked it in very warm water, then shampooed it twice, applied an inexpensive cream rinse, rinsed it well with water, let it dry and gave it a try. It is very soft, much softer than the boar brush from Rite-Aid the difference is Night and Day!The bristles on the Pro model are also a lot longer.

I'm very pleased with the Omega Pro! Works just as well as my Badger did!

I hadn't thought to shampoo the brush I'll have to give that a try. How often do you shampoo it?

Today was my best lather day and I shaved 2 days in a row with out irritation for the first time ever. I usually shave every other day or longer but im getting addicted to the whole shaving experience.
Today I floated my HOT bowl in hot water and had the moistest thickest lather I've ever felt!
Great SHAVE.
I'm still using the Fusion and feel like I can only get so close before I start shaving off skin. Looking forward to getting a straight.

I must say, I give you credit for having patience and learning how to prep before jumping in with the straight. I cannot say I went about it the same way, but your way is definitely right.

By the way, Badgers aren't "better" than boars, just different. I actually prefer boar to badger. I own 4 Semogue Boar brushes and two badgers.

I like spending my money on quality things and that means moving to straight shaving wont be cheap. So while I am waiting for the good 'ol IRS check i decided to practice face prep and lather building with some economy stuff.
It really has held me over.
I tell you guys, I am so happy to have you hear to listen to me babble on about lather.
The looks I get from my wife:banghead: when I talk about it are hilarious.

I personally find, with some soaps I prefer the lather with my badger with others my boar, my creams lather better always with my badger. a badger brush need not cost the earth so why not buy a cheapish one to start with and spend the extra on soaps :D

incidentally i recomend the tweezerman as a cheap badger, I have more expensive, but it is my goto.
