Leftover shave gel
I just ordered my first razor and a strop. They will arrive in 1-5 business days. I am excited. I have two large cans of shaving gel that I purchased at a big-box warehouse club awhile back and I hate to throw things away. How much trouble am I asking for if I start my straight razor shaving experience with canned shave gel?

im sure others will answer the shaving question, but if in the end you need to "dispose" of the cans i would sugest a .223. It really opens up the can quick and is a cool looking mess.

I wouldn't shave with it...
Maybe you can talk your significant other to have a shaving cream wrestling match or something along those lines.

Go for it. While many find that traditional shaving soaps/creams are much nicer, the canned stuff still works. If you want to, but all means do it. If you don't, then by all means don't.
It is indeed fun to reach out and touch something with 5.56, I would imagine the can would give a nice pop! :gwh:

What kind of shave gel is it? I get GREAT results with Aveeno shave gel. I've also shot some on top of a biscuit of shaving soap in the mug and mixed it all around and that was fine too. No need to throw it away.

Some things to do with the stuff, I got left over cans of Edge gel and some barbasol foam aloe. Wondering what to do with these myself, maybe a backyard bon fire...
BOOM!

It's Edge gel for sensitive skin and it really seems like a good product for standard shaving. I think I'll give it a try but will have a brush and soap or cream or both just in case. And probably some pre-shave oils and after-shaves. The initial investment is more than what I initially anticipated (and I was frankly trying to get by with the minimum set-up) but when I saw a pack of replacement cartridges for my Sensor were over $20, plus all that plastic, I needed to take the plunge. Now that I'm committed, I guess I need to go all the way. Thanks for the responses and good advice.

It can be used to make your shave cave mirrors fog free. Just spray a quarter sized gob on your fingers and rub it around on your mirror let is sit for a couple minutes. Then simply remove the foam with a paper towel and your mirrors will remain fog free for a week or two at which time you repeat the procedure. With your mirrors treated in this way, you actually have a fog free mirror even if someone else is in the shower and the entire room is full of steam.

canned gel will improve if you add more water
you can probably whip some in in your shaving bowl

I recently threw out a few cans of the goo myself. I had the same line of thinking as the OP; why throw it out it as may be useful some day?
Then I realized that I hadn't used a drop for 2.5 - 3 years and probably never would. I have way too many varieties of the good stuff (traditional soaps and creams, meant for use with a brush) to even consider using canned goo ever again. So, into the garbage bin they went....:tu

I was back at my parents and shaved with the canned goo and a straight. Definitely waaaay worse than a decent shave soap or cream IMO.
I reckon that the soap is one of the areas not to skimp as it can really make or break the shave.

If you have any kids they could do some "shaving cream art" on a dining room or other table. Just spray it on and let them go to town. You use up that old shaving cream, entertain the kids for a good half-hour and get a nice deep-cleaned table!

IMHO you can always be a shaving philanthropist and give it to a friend who still shaves with a multi-blade razor.
Or you can give it to your significant other for her to shave her legs.

if you're just learning to use a brush and soap I would use a small squirt on the soap to help you build lather untill you get proficient at doing it without assistance. trying to reduce it till you have good lather just from soap or cream would probably be the best way. I've never tried it with the canned foam this way, but the gel does help keep the lather from being too soupey or dry without takeing much away from it. I would say that after about a month of reduceing the amount of gel on your soap you should be able to get the soap where you want it on your own. besides it takes a while to shave when you first start and the gel should keep the lather moist longer.

Hybrids
Interesting thread. I've got some Melaleuca (used gift), a foaming gel, that has been sitting around for 3 years. I'll try to augment it with the (in)famous J.B. Williams "long lasting lather" puck and see how it goes. Oh, Ryan82... why didn't you give it to some poor sop? It would be part of our rebellion, denying the giant corporate conglomerates a few purchases.
Why, Ryan82, WHY?

I believe food banks might take that stuff too, they do in my part of the world.
