I have looked at this forum extensively and cannot find any reference to 'resting' razors.
My apologies if I have put this in the wrong place - mods please move it if I have.
All the research that I did prior to beginning this journey (and before I found this site) indicated that straight razors should be 'rested' for 48hrs between shaves yet I have not seen this mentioned here.
Could the more experienced members of this site share any thoughts they may have on this subject?

No razor needs rest.
Just strop before every use.
The razor I happen to be using gets 24 hours rest max. If it's not up to the job, it gets stropped or honed, but no rest for the weary.
A lot of the myths regarding rest seem to have evolved before much study was done on straight razors and before the people who owned straight razors also owned microscopes.

Razors need a minimum of 14 days between shaves 100 days between shaves is even better,,,
Honest wife, these guys have no clue what they are talking about, I am right, I do need all those razors :)
Sorry guys, I am with Glen on this one. I read somewhere that they need a 1 year rest period before being re-used. So lets work on our collections.

Maybe where the resting myth has come from?
I could rotate my razors and use a different one over an eight day period...Not a huge collection by SRP member standards, but enough for me. However I would find that tedious, so I just use one 'til I'm sick of it, then swap over to another. Giving the last one a hone and oil, before resting, until I get back around to using it sometime down the track.

For me, a razor is like a song.
With a song, I hear a new one and fall in love with it, and overplay it all the time. Eventually, I get tired of overplaying it and it moves into the regular rotation on my ipod while I over-listen to the next neat new musical discovery.

Unfortunately i have to go against many of you and agree with OP .

Resting the blade does help Edge last longer.

Why do you think that is? My experience is, there's no difference and I don't understand the logic that suggests there is. Equally, 24 hours between shaves is usual anyway, isn't it? How are you telling the difference?Quote:

I did say at least 24 hours will be correct if you rest it 48 hours.
To find out the differences you will need to have exact 2 blades honing job done by same person.
then you will need to use first one and shave every day .
See how long edge will last.
Mark the day and move to next blade.
Use it after 48 hours and see how long this blade will last.
Mark the day and compare one to next.
Now i am not sure have you guys seen honed edge pics or not. It is so thin by pushing with you finger slightly it will bend. if you take your finger out gave it time or just go head strop you will see how will it straighten up .
After shave your edge is bend ,curved etc. when you give it time it will come back slightly. then you strop edge is fine.
if you don't give enough time to the edge and strop your weak edge will get weaker and soon you will start to have small chips first then big chips. so on.

this is how i have done my test.
i did count number of shaves i got from each blade.
Lets say i used x blade every day.
Edge lasted 15 shaves.
y blade i used every 2 days.
y blade lasted 30 shaves and still was sharp enough to shave comfortable .
it just gets boring to use same razor every time for a months .
result was clear for me and i stop the test.
i don't shave every day off days i let hair grow( i need them for my next shave test) i usually use 3 days or 4 days grow to find out edge is true shave ready or not.
