My college set up.

Well in just a few short weeks I'll be headed off to college, so I thought I'd run my shaving kit by yall to see if you think it will be sufficient. I've got one straight, a 1908 ASCO cutlery from germany, a TOBs badger brush, CO Biglow shave cream, a Ruprazor strop, I'm thinking Trumper's spanish leather aftershave, witch hazel and a skeptic pencil. I have my Great Grandfather Gillette DE (predates serial numbers) but I think I will leave it home for fear of something happening, I know not likely but I don't know what I'd do if it did. So today I orders a Edwin Jagger DE86, do you think this is a good choice for a second DE. I would have rather had another straight but I am NROTC Marine Option and have 6 AM Pt three mandatory times a week and would prefer to have a faster back up then a straight thats not a cartridge. What do you think? Any tips or suggestions.

Looks like a great set-up. I agree that the Jagger will be a great addition to your arsenal.

My main recommendation is to take a second straight as a backup, in case something should happen to the first and you don't want to be forced to use the DE. You also may want to look into something for touchups for the straights; such as paste on a strop surface or a barber hone.

Good call on leaving the valuable razor at home. When living communally, you have to expect other people's parents weren't as good at raising kids as yours were.

Looks like a decent set up. If you don't want to go whole hog and do a second straight, maybe a shavette for when the straight is out of commission. Where you heading? Was it you who I saw in another thread that's heading to Liberty? If so, I'm not too far north of ya (maybe two hours, max).

Thanks guys. I'd like a new razor and will get one if I come up with some extra cash the same goes for a Secound strop I can paste. No bharner I'm headed to university of Missouri in Columbia.

While I'll be a freshman I'm NROTC so I'll be around upperclassmen all the time. Oh and I'm rooming with a junior. :-) The EJ just come in and its BEAUTIFUL, I going to try it right now. For $25 I think it was a steal. I'll keep you posted.

Your set sounds awesome. Some advice for you from someone who shaved with straight razors in college dorms and only graduated two years ago. Let your roommates be awed the first time the see you shave with the straight, however, make it clear that they are not to touch it (or the edge)...all you need is for someone to move their thumb perpendicular to the cutting edge to see if it's sharp and <snap> they just ruined your edge on a microscopic level. So just keep it in a dorm in your room. Not sure if you have a bathroom in your suite or not as a freshman, but if you ever do - do not leave anything in there that will rust (dorm bathrooms are constantly steamy). If your roommates are your friends, or will be, or what have you, people want to try things, and touch things, etc. Make sure the things that should not be touched like the straight are put away with your personal stuff...it might be innocent curiosity, but the wrong movement on the wrong equipment can be real bad. Best of luck in college, enjoy it - it is the best time of your life.

Sounds like a great setup to me. Just make sure that you take a sufficient number of your favorite de razor blades for the EJ you will be taking with you.

+1 on Holli's advice. Take a second straight. That way you can rotate their use and lengthen the time between necessary resharpening--either with diamond paste or a barber's hone.

And ++1 on TSviper86's advice. Make it crystal clear to your roommates, etc. that they are not to touch or make use of any your shaving equipment in any way, shape or form, without your permission.
