So my grandfather just gave me a Otto Deutsch Hans that he has had hiding in the basement for some time. It is brand new and when I took it out of the plastic and took it out of the box the blade had some sort of wax on it. Can anyone tell me exactly what this is and how I can get it off so I can start shaving?
I can not help. I searched the wiki and found nothing....my guess would be if it doesn't wipe off easily to run it under hot water. and If you have never shaved before you might want to make sure the blade is shave ready. possibly send it out to be honed
It was put there to protect the blade from rusting. It might have started as oil and oxidized to something waxy. You can probably get most of it off with hot water and a towel. Try a little dish detergent if that doesn't work. Next, try rubbing alcohol. If the scales are celluloid, DO NOT use acetone or it'll melt them. If they're wood or bone or horn, and you still need to rid the blade of stubborn goo, then try acetone.

Goo Gone works great on oxidized oil.
I ran it under some super hot water which made the goo easy to wipe off. There was still a little thin layer on so a little rubbing alcohol took that off. This will be my first shave with a straight so wish me luck! Fortunately this blade is incredibly sharp which I'm hoping will help.

Congratulations. Your grandfather has great taste. You are getting a really fine razor. I wish you well.
Repeating what others have said, it will really help to read the stickies on straight razor shaving, the beginner's section on the Wiki, and watch Lynn's video. It will make the journey a lot more fun.
