Team approach to collecting straight razors

I've decided that while I love buying straight razors, I'm going to limit my collection to 7 daily shavers. So here's my approach. I still want to buy/sell razors, so I'm going to refine my 7 day set as I find razors I like better. It's a bit like running a team, you have you're players but always on the look out for a good trade. If I don't do this I'll end up with 100+ razors! I'll probably keep 10 or so razors on hand at any given time, but the focus will be getting rid of anything that doesn't make the 7 day razor cut.

sounds like a great way for beginners to get into this method of shaving.

Sounds pretty sound, to me!

I'm moreso trying to create the dream team of razors. Like a razor rotation consisting of Michael Jordan, Walter Payton, Patrick Kane, Fedor Emelianenko, John Daly, Derek Jeter, Michael Schumacher and Nick Swardson all shaving my face.

Good plan if you can do it and if that is the approach you want to take. OTOH, nothing wrong with owning 100 + razors. :)

I initially limited myself to 7, swapping out razors now and then. Thinking back to the ones I used to have, there are a lot I wish I could get back. These days I keep more and more, but am also more selective about what I'll buy in the first place.

Well that's the plan, but even now I find myself wavering! I'll probably just end up with 100+ razors! I have this problem with wine, guitars, cars, etc!

It sounds like a great plan and a great way to try out a lot of razors without... well killing the bank, if you sell the ones your moving on from.

I hope to be shaving free in the near future with my buying and selling! I LOVE deal making, weather it be razors or private equity!

Yeah I'll try to keep that valuable advice in mind....:confused:

Good luck with this idea, I started with the exact same idea, "only 7 razors" then it was 14, then 21, then 28, and at 77 razors I decided I had failed miserably :) and came up with a new one... "No more than 100 at a time" :rofl2:

I still have only 5 or 6 shavers. My rule is that all my shavers have to fit in the 7-razor rotation box my mother made for me. If I finish a restoration and use it for a while, something else will be sold to make everything fit in the box.
I have some interesting projects on my bench, but the rule will hold.

I thought we cleared this up when we had the discussion about razor "rest". Each razor needs to rest for 365 days. Guess what that brings the total number of razors to.

Har har. yea when I started I bought a vintage wood box and refinished it and said I'm only going to buy enough razors to fit into that box. it worked for a while. Now I have I don't know how many boxes filled with razors.

A seven man team sounds good. Of course, with only seven guys playing, you'll need a few backups on the roster, not to mention a practice squad.

And of course the AAA and AA teams.

And single A team.

Yep, that's what happened to me! :)

And with the stones as well...

I thought I'd got away with the strops but guess who just ordered a new custom strop from Neil Miller? I can't wait to get my hands on that beauty! :) Stunning!

Good luck with those AD's, let's talk in a year and see if you've stuck to just 7! :D

A 7 day rotation approach (plus a couple of extras) makes sense to me, swapping out older less favored razors to make room for the new ones coming in.

I'm trying stick to 13 myself. It's causing much grief.

So - 2 and 1/2 years later how's that "team of 7" going? :rofl2: I'm guessing there are over 100 (or more) on the team by now.

I try to stick to the 7 razors. I have 8 now. I try to keep the ones I'm more comfortable with.

Sounds like you have good discipline Vic! That's an admirable quality in this world of straight razors. I used to have discipline… My rotation is normally 7 as well but there always seems to be an 8th hanging around the box. …and another few hundred lurking close by in my shop's storage. …and an additional few thousand or so just a keyboard click (and razor budget bank account balance) away.

Two yrs ago I had 130+ blades,today I have 15,will never buy another,Unless a great deal comes along:)

You are two years my senior in straight razor shaving. Let's see what I will say in two more years. There are eight straights at home, but many lurking in the classifieds and ebay...:hmmm:

Some people have 3 years worth of rotations to pad their hone and HAD stats ;)
