I recently purchased a straight razor and had no clue what I was doing. I introduced myself to the list and asked for local advice. A very nice gentleman named walt took 4 hours of his time to show me diffedifferent razors and to get mine shave ready. He showed me how to stop and explained the process. I ordered a strop with his blessing and can't wait to try my razor. Just wanted to take a moment to thank an expert. There is a wealth of knowledge out there if you ask. Thanks
Sam - Thanks for the kind words, but it was purely selfish on my part. I lured you into my lair with an offer to hone your razor just to have the opportunity to talk to another living human being with a shared interest in this hobby (obsession?). I wonder how many other SRP members have this same problem of not having a single friend, acquaintance, or family member who gives a rat's "patoot" about this passion in our lives. Anyway, it was great to meet you and to spend some time talking about razors. And I am really looking forward to that "field trip" we discussed. Hopefully in the near future.

For me, I met a fellow Norwegian into straights on an American forum, turned out he lives just down the road from me, like 2 minutes walking distance, crazy stuff! :)

First big Kudos to Walt for helping a start out.
I agree though that depending on where you live it is hard to find people to share your interest. I was fortunate enough that MAXI stepped up and welcomed me into his home to give me the beginners tour but that was still 2 hours away without traffic. So not a trip that easily made on the spur of the moment.
Sorry to hijack the thread, but I just got an email from a very good friend in Leesburg, Va. saying that his wife (bless 'em all) had found a straight razor at an auction and brought it home for him. He isn't quite sure about the make/model or anything else about it, but I told him that the good folks at SRP would probably be happy to help him out. Anybody in the Leesburg, Va area that can lend a hand? Thanks.

Walt--nice work! In answer to your question, yes, I'm another straight shaver in the middle of shaving nowhere. I've tried to get a couple of coworkers started, but they're too spooky about it.
And yet, SOMEBODY visits antique stores about a week before I do and clears out their straights. Unless that's just a stock phrase among antique dealers... "Oh, you should have come in last week..."
My wife is very generous with her interest. At least she no longer nods off when I mention shaving.
Anyway, you guys are lucky.
+100 on this, meeting some locals was the best learning experience possible as I didn't know anybody using a SR either.
