I am trying to find out what impact shaving with a SR has on facial hair growth. Since I started shaving with a SR, I could swear that my beard is growing more rapidly and is heavier than in the past. I am also curious to know if shaving with a SR changes the pattern of hair growth depending on how it is cut by the blade. Any ideas??
What were you shaving with before?

Any ideas about how a SSR effects the direction of the hair growth. As I shave on the right side of my face, I have noticed that I don't get as clean a shave as I do on my left. I realize that this might be due to how I'm holding the blade, how well it is honed, etc. I try to be as consistent with my stroke and the angle as possible. I'm sure I just need more practice.
P.S. I sent my SR out to get honed by the Hone master at Classic Shaving and I'm very pleased with the result. I gladly recommend them.
I'll drop a dime on this discussion, and while I may not be right, you'll have to admit that this makes sense. With a straight razor, you are shaving down to the skin surface. You can get that "baby butt smooth" shave doing this, and you'll spend time stroking your smooth face. If you were using a multi-blade cartridge before straight shaving, you were probably able to cut the whisker below skin level. Now, that would be a striking shave, but by doing so you opened up the door for ingrown hairs and the numerous blades were possible able to breed irritation. So your previous shaves may have felt smoother longer because you actually were getting a "closer" shave. Notice I did not say "better". A great shave is one that you are happy with and one that looks good. Shaving until your skin is red and blotchy may provide that "BBS" shave, but it will not be as good as one that is not as close or smooth. Somewhere there is a balance. You just need to find the balance that you are satisfied with.

If it were true, your whiskers would grow faster and stronger, you'll end up with a beard like Santa Claus (Sinterklaas) every day, made of hairs thicker than electrical wire. Your pores would be over 1 mm wide and catch dirt and bacteria all day.:eek:
The few months I shave with the SE I have noticed my face stays smoother during the day and my 5 o'clock shadow starts to appear late at night (around 24.00). I feel a distinct stubble by the time I leave my bed.
All in all the SE shave is far more accurate and gives more satisfaction on your own achievement then even a smooth GMach3 one!
And yes, I too feel all day how smooth my cheeks still are (I would rather a nice looking woman/women would do that, but you can't win 'm all :D )
A while back I decided to try my disposable because I wasn't happy with the shave I was getting with my straight at the time. I hadn't realised that compared to the disposable it was fantastic. I just never paid that much attention before.Quote:

They say that if you shave your head your hair can grow back differently. Curley or the direction may change. Although I have to say that I shaved my head in my younger years and all it did for me was made me look like a Nazi for about 6 months, not the look I was after.
It is a myth that if you shave an area hair will grow back thicker and heavier. There is no doubt about it.Quote:

Another obervation is when you shave hair it becomes a uniform length giving a dense look that appears to have increased the number of hairs.
When hair first comes out of the folicle it is slightly thicker from being surrounded with moisture. As it gets longer it loses some of it's moisture and thins a bit. So a close shave lets you observe thicker hair than it would be at, say, an inch, but this obervation isn't a transformation in the way your hair grows. This sounds like a big factor, but my bet is it is the least observable factor of the ones mentioned here.
Lastly, a hair that is .05 mm long hair that grows a couple mm a day looks like it's growing alot faster than a 1 mm hair that grows a couple mm a day (same speed). It's a relative ratio thing.
Hair grows in cycles pre-determined by genetics. There are three phases: growth, recede, rest....... then it falls out. The eyebrow growth cycle is about 4 months. The hair on your head (scalp) has a growth cycle of about 4 years. This is why eyebrows are a fixed length and the hair on your hair appears to grow eternally. It doesn't though, it maxes out at about (again) 4 years.
Shaving does not permently change your hair in any way I know of.
I do my head a couple of times a week. I wish it would make my hair grow back thicker :D
