That does tend to happen, eh?
I'm in the same boat. I can't recommend that strop enough for beginners.
This was my idea I took a sedef (turkish shavette), an old wide leather belt I had and practiced first got the idea without the blade then tested myself with the blade. sure it got a few nicks in it !!! but its a real cheap way to practice. when it comes to it its all about learning the hand skills involved the point at which to roll the razor on its spine so your travelling in the opposite direction before the blade lands back on the strop. then when honeing its the opposite again. this can then get confusing as you start to get quicker and whilst its not that likley to damage a hone (but could damage a good razor) you can easly end up with two very short strops.
thinking about it this is where gold dollar razor comes it to its own whilst you may never get a good edge on it you can practice till there is nothing left then be content with the fact you have got rid of anouther piece of shit that gives straight razors a bad name!
It happens. As you probably have already learned...take it slow...don't need to have it zinging to do the job :)
