new member looking for advice.

Hi,
i'm new to this site and just looking for a little advice on buying a straight razor.
tried searching round the forums but couldn't find the answers to my concerns.

Basically I am looking to buy a straight razor but would like to try one the disposable blade straight razors first. Just to be sure I can shave with a straight razor confidently. I dont want to spend a lot of money on a straight razor and then have it in the bathroom cabinet gathering dust :)
In searching around amazon and ebay etc. there is a lot of choice.
I'm just wondering can anyone recommend an inexpensive disposable bladed straight razor for a beginner?
Hopefully it is not anathema to speak of disposable blades on a straight razor forum :)

You could also take a look at whippeddog.com. They have some good starter sets.....or go with the "no sharpen" ones.....really depends on your budget, commitment level, etc.

Let me also welcome you to SRP as well. +++1 on hamilton946's advice. Explore the SRP wiki. It will provide you with lots and lots of information concerning razors, etc.

As for a shavette...That is an inexpensive way to begin, but you ought to be aware that the technique is a bit different than that of a regular straight razor.

My advice would be for you to check the SRP classifieds or Whipped Dog. You can probably find an inexpensive vintage straight razor there that costs the same or less than a shavette.

I started with the Dovo Shavette, and that worked fine for me.

I started out with the Feather Artist club, after a recommendation from a coworker. I have been shaving with it now for over a month. I like the ability to change the blade as needed. However I still feel wanting with it. I wish I had found this site before the decisions I had made.

Looking back, if I were going to do it again, I would go with the whipped dog site unseen deal (actually asking for it for Xmas). On the other hand if disposable is the way you want to go, I recommend the Parker razor. Coming off a de, I had extra blades to use. You do get what you pay for, and the Parker will get the job done, but does feel cheap.

Anything to get you started, is a step closer. Good luck.

i'll report back on my findings

I started with a Dovo Shavette and as stated above the technique is a bit different than an actual str8. I will also say i used the shavette for about 2-3weeks and then wanted to move to the real thing and WOW what a difference!! i now only the use the shavette to straighten my sideburns and occasionally for travel so i don;t have to pack the strop, the case, the scuttle, blah, blah, blah! if you can find a shave ready razor on the classifieds here for the same or a little more than the shavette i would say get that!!!! best of luck!

hey thanks for all the great advice. I'm going to contact whippeddog.com and hopefully pick a razor there as the prices look reasonable. So hopefully Larry can help me out and has no issues posting to Ireland. Great advice on this forum as I could easily have bought a cheap blunt straight edge on amazon. Thanks very much, Jack
