It always leaves a bit of residue on my blades. I just deal with it because I like the thinness of the tape and the feel of it on the hones.
It's like a relationship....there are things that I can put up with, and things that I can't :D

I can only give an opinion, I've never tried duct tape, but I'd say no. It's probably too thick and I have no idea how it would hold up. I'm using Tartan 1710 electrical with no problems, and have used 3M 1700 with good results. Just get a roll in that range and you shoul be fine.

Edit: Maxi and Ben typed faster than me and they obviously know more about duct tape than me, and probably a lot more things!
Never an issue with 33,most all Electrical tape is .007 thick.
I get a little tape residue, and find the tape itself manages to get most of it off...remove the strip and dab with it. After I always wipe the blade with alcohol. Seems to do the trick.
Always carry a roll of 33+ at work. Works great as a waterproof bandaid as well in a pinch...
