I've done a few shaves with my dad's blade but he wants me to have my own. Is there a kit with a good blade, strop, stone, soap and brush? I have 100USD total for all this, so it can't be that everlasting stuff.

Hey buddy,
I'm pretty new to this wet shaving thing myself, so I can't offer much information. But, if you want a nice brush on the cheap, and you don't mind mixing up some 30 minute epoxy, check out The Golden Nib. They sell badger knots in various grades and resin handles. I was surprised at the low cost. I bought their very best grade of badger knot (super silver tip) in 24mm for $33. They have plenty of other grades that look sweet for less $. I put the knot together in a resin handle that I also bought from them, and I love it. Hope this helps.
buy a nice shave ready razor on classifieds on this forum and an nice soap+boar brush and use now for the time you dads strop and stone.
When you have saved money buy a nice strop ect ect.
have fun
Are you in Australia at all mate? I can help you out with regards a strop if you are. I don't do overseas though. Costs go through the roof.

Surprised nobody's mentioned this yet.

Whippeddog.com
Sight unseen razor and strop
That'll even leave you with a pretty decent chunk of change left over.
I started out with the sight unseen deal from whippeddog.com, the razor came shave ready, bought myself a cheap badger brush and some williams mug soap from amazon for around $75 total.
But watch out that RAD is a slippery slope.
Cheap solution for a stone is a piece of plate glass and some wet/dry sandpaper. If you look you can get grits from 100-2000. I started that way. Still have the plate glass. 1/4" plate glass cut to size was like $4. Then some wet/dry sandpaper from auto parts store in 800, 1000, 2000 grit was around $15 total or so. Then the whippeddog.com kit should keep you well under your budget.
Just my $.02
I have heard good things about the whippeddog deal and you can get a brush at target or a drug store for about 8 dollars that is not bad you can also go to a beauty supple store and get a razor that takes replacement razor blades for about 12 dollars so you can learn to shave then you can get a strop later and use your replacement blade razor on it without hurting anything if you mess up just replace the blade good learning tool when you don't have much money you can use a coffee cup as you mug from the dollar store but you do want to get a good soup and after shave balm that will make a big difference on enjoying your beginning shaving that way you can buy your stuff a little at a time and learn at the same time then buy a nice shave ready razor and then get your hone last
this one at home depot seems to be the most reasonably-priced sandpaper as well as the highest-grit I could find: SandWet 600 Grit Ultra-Fine Sandpapers (5-Pack)-02343 at The Home Depot
The brush is most likely a boar hair which I still use sometime still and like I would say to look at the review section on here for a good soap their is also a good thread in this section on shaving supples that you need you can ask the poster of that thread where he got his prices from he came up with start up between 80 and 120
Wrong kind of sand paper that would be for wood I believe he was talking about automotive sand paper which would be for metal I think you can get 2000 grit from a auto paint supplier but I don't know about doing that never tried it you would need about 12000 grit to get a good finish blade for a razor
I'm looking at http://www.ebay.com/itm/320844023448. 1/3 budget for the stone, another 1/3 for the blade... now to locate a strop.
edit: 1/2 budget for "Sight Unseen Deal" with the strop and 1/3rd for the stone and the brush and soap will be local.
anyone else have an idea or list?
You can probably get everything you need (except a whole cake of shaving soap)from Larry for under $100. If you go with the "sight unseen" deal, that leaves you with $46. He's got several beautiful badger brushes with walnut & stainless steel handles; these sell for $29 (black badger) or $35 (super badger). Either way, you come out with money left over.
I've done business with Larry on a number of occasions, and he's great.
one quick question before I drop 54$ for the sight unseen deal: there's a note on the deal that says the tip of the blade is dulled. what purpose does this serve?
On square-points, also known as spikes, a lot of honers like to round off that square point just a bit for new users because it can be easy to dig it into your face when you're maneuvering in tight or awkward places like the corners of your mouth or your upper lip or near your ear around your jawline. That's probably what that means.
sent in my email for the blade and strop kit. now it's sit-and-wait.
I just picked up a shaving soap, old spice aftershave, shaving bowl, brush and one of those nick-fixer sticks.
I noticed something about the soap... it was only .94USD. why are all the online ones over 4$ + shipping?
20$ total;

my dad spotted me for this. :D
Because they're not William's Mug Soap. Don't get me wrong, I love the stuff, it's my main, and usually only soap. But if you've got slightly to very hard water, it can be a bear to lather. It's a perfectly good soap though, if you're willing to put in the work for it. And if you can get a good lather out of it consistently, you can get a good lather out of anything.
When I got my sight unseen deal from whipped dog last month he included a sample of soap with it. You may ask him if he'd be willing to do that. It was really nice stuff. It was Bald Frog soap. Enough for a dozen shaves at least.
Am I to assume that I actually leave the soap in the mug/bowl after whipping it up for a shave? wouldn't that eventually get nasty looking?
The soap stays in the bowl, yes. Common sense would be to give it a rinse out with some clean water when you're done mate, and drain out any excess water. It's only as 'nasty' as you allow it to get.
