i need help with razor restoration and just getting a usable edge on the thing.

I saw a antique razor at a show and bought one in hopes of restoring it. I did a pretty good job polishing it up , but it did get pretty hot (i heard something about tempering being effected by heat so chime in if i screwed up my razor beyond repair, just for more info i buffed the razor to the point where it actually left a small burn on my finger)

So i need some info on what i need in the future to restore these old grimey blades , i am using a dremel and have slipped off the razor and nicked the edge a few times so i know im screwing these first razors up pretty bad.

So now that the edge is unusable for my first two razors , how can i make the finish as flawless as possible so i can use them as decoration or something? im not liking the dremel way of doing it , are there other ways? What would be a list of things i would need to restore old razors to usable condition?

I bought a cheap "selective razor strop co. new york" strop and i dont know what i should be looking at here. It was really stiff so i look at varios advice threads and lathered it up and used pumice stone on it but i think i did it too much, what type of texture am i looking for with a strop? also if you can provide a link to a good strop that is under 70 bucks that would be great since this one is likely ruined and will only be used for practice.

I also picked up a norton 1000/4000 water stone , it works pretty good for restoring the chipped edges i had on my one dremel razor. Should i also get a 4000/8000 stone? The reason i ask is that i cant get my current razors sharp enough to shave with. so i dont know if its technique or whatever.

First, welcome to SRP. Second, STOP!

I say that not out of a desire to discourage, but rather so that you can learn at a reasonable pace. You're trying to do too much, and you clearly don't have the right tools. Before you start trying to restore razors, learn how to use them. Before you try to teach yourself to hone, learn what shave ready really means. And you won't ever get there with a 1000/4000 combo stone. You'll want to go to at least 8000 grit. That will get you a good shave, but probably not the smoothest of experiences.

Rather than throwing good money after bad, pick up a decent shave ready razor (the classifieds are often a good place to look) or better yet, look at a complete kit from a recognized vendor with a strop and razor combined... Also, I commend to your reading the wiki!

Hi there, and welcome to the forum.

The best place to start is to read the Wiki. There is a plethora of basic and advanced information there, which will help you with your tasks.

Task #1: If you want to restore blades, fine.....just get something else to learn to shave with, don't try yours just yet.

Task #2: Learn to shave with something honed properly by one of the honers from SRP or a reputable vendor (ebay is not a reputable vendor).

Task #3: Learn to strop. Get a strop from SRD.

Task #4: In order to learn task #1 through 3.....read, read, read, read, read and read, and then try.

There are pages and pages of wiki articles on sanding and hand sanding, and what to use.

wouldn't want you to have to do anything yourself...

ya that is some solid logic

with the time he spent writing that message he could have provided a link , instead he didnt and just stated obvious Sh*t. Why have a beginner section if we are just told to read the wiki whenever we have a question

I am afraid it is you who have misunderstood your own analogy. We are not employees. We are not paid to help you. We are like-minded people who enjoy straight razors. We do not have to put up with rude people if we do not want to.

I have all the time in the world to be rude to other rude people on the internet.

What i dont have patience for is people who set up forums with a beginners section and expect people to rift through an entire encyclopedia to find the small information they seek that could be answered quickly in less than a paragraph , or just simply linking the article in question.

sorry to hear of your dremel woes ...been there ... ruined a couple .... if you hang around here a while you will find your work improving due in large part to a few who have responded to your original post ... sometimes these posts can sound off ... but dont let it discourage you , you just need to hang in there and figure them all out ... you WILL get there. I dont think there is a single person in this forum who would not try to help you.
