Thread: First Shave - I Rocked It

I didn't rock it, but I needed a subject that would grab attention, since "First Shave" is about as played out as the Simpsons.

I had my very first shave tonight, and went with the suggested method of just doing one side of my face the first time. I can tell you that I have one smooth cheek right now. Hopefully soon I'll graduate to both sides and not have a lopsided shave in the near future - the cartridge razor just doesn't balance things out.

Thanks to everyone in the community who offered advice and answered questions, and thanks to Don and Lynn from SRP (and SRD) for selling my starting setup, which is simply wonderful. I'll post more as I gain more experience.

One of my lessons learned - or really questions - that came out of the first shave... It's damn hard to shave in a mirror! Everything being backwards makes me move the razor in funny ways. I ended up looking away from the mirror and going by touch to get started because the mirror was doing more harm than good. No, I'm not "short bus" special, mirrors are just... a mystery... to me...

Trying to shave with your opposite hand and going around your upper lip and jugular keep things interesting as you progress!

I have no idea what rocking something means in the context you have used it. I had thought you got mightly pissed off with cutting yourself and performed a Palistinian style stoning of the offending article. However good for you for attempting your first shave with a cut-throat razor.

And here I was trying to use the mirror mounted on the ceiling directly above my bed. BATHROOM mirror.... There's a thought....

If the mirror bothers you, shave with your back to it.

mirrors... I don't trust them...

Shaved again today. Was similar to before. The angles are still really awkward. Because both my hand and the handle of the razor are in the way, it's difficult to see exactly what angle (30 degree?) I'm using, so right now, it's guestimates. It's also been a challenge to get the razor perpendicular to the side of my face (sideburns, etc) to make sure that I'm not going to have a crooked hairline at the top of my cheeks. I guess this all takes time, but I am having fun, and haven't yet killed anyone.

Xel, I recommend that you jump on the bus early here and practise shaving using your left and right hand (but not both at the same time...No that would just be plain silly ) It will help with those finicky little vision problems if you can change to the other hand and just a minimal amount of head twisted contortions. Also to get your angle about right think in spine width/thickness rather than guesstimating the angle by other means. Work on having the spine about 1.5 to 2 spine thickness' away from your face and take it from there. You'll need to adjust to suit your facial angles etc and fine tune everything to suit, but it gives you a starting point.
I'll leave it at that anyway mate, you might already know this stuff.
