How many razors would be a good compromise?
I know you can never have to many bright shinny sharp things:D (thats why I got more than 50 Spyderco's:nj ) but how many is good for a reasonable rotation?

hahaha, man, you are asking the wrong crowd here.
I think you'll find round these parts, it's probably the number of posts you have :)
To be fair just 2 could do you just fine. That way each razor has some time to "rest" before you pick it up.
Offcourse you'll probably not think that's enough after a while. But I personally can do with just one since I only shave every other day. My skin is quite sensitive and beard quite light...plus it's blond so you don't see it for a few days untill it starts to get quite long.
So all I need (If I'd becutting down to a minimum) would be my pretty 7/8 Thiers Issard....
I kinda figured that would be the answer!
No matter how many you have, its never enough!
What I was trying to get to was should I be buying one or two mint condition razors, or go for a handfull of older razors?
I like the mint ones.....but once again it's a matter of taste. Just have a look around and see what you like. The older razors are often very nice to, once they've been restored that is. You might like having a razor that you've put a lot of work into even more then getting a brand new one...
The honest, no nonsense answer is that you need only one razor. One brush, one hone, one strop. One bourbon, one scotch, one beer...

oh, than you simply tell your wife the old mumbo jumbo that the razor needs 48 hours rest between shavings. Add + 48 hours for every razor you plan to get.
Nenad
But that only gets you to three razors.Quote:

Also, you're not spending money on razors, you're investing it. Provided you have enough to reduce hone wear to negligible, you'll always be able to sell them off for what you paid (provided you're not buying all new razors) or bequeath them or even just trade them for razors you believe you will prefer to the ones you have. You need at least a couple to try out and figure out what you like.

Seriously.... don't as me. There's no way I can be unbiased. I tried for a few minutes to arrive at a fair number of razors but everytime I visualized myself with just a few, I got a really sick feeling in my gut. To me one or two of every one ever made would be just about right although I suppose I could be pretty happy with about three for regular shaving ... at least until I went through my collection and pulle dout another three to use for awhile.
Yes, that's right, fifteen razors. Why you may ask? That's how many fit into my barber's box. Any less would disrupt the fragile balance in my life; any more would be in danger of damage because there is no place to store them safely and well.
I will grudgingly agree with Nenad that a single brush is sufficient (providing you have found the right one). For me it is a Chubby #2 made by Simpson's. However, I will vehemently disagree with the proposal that man can live (let alone be happy) with only one scotch. Six maybe, one is simply uncivilized.
Now you have a bit of a glimpse into my somewhat parochial existence :p .
Cheers,
Ed

Two, everything else is just for enjoyment.
1 is a bare minimum.
2 so each blade can rest between shaves
3 to have a spare in case you inadvertently damage one
4 to also have a traveller
5 to have 2 travellers
6 to have a spare, two travellers plus some enjoyment
7 to have a 7-day set
8 to have a 7-day set and a spare
9 to have a 7 day set, a spare and a traveller
10 to have a 7 day set, a spare and 2 travellers
There's always an excuse :D
I received 5, in dribs and drabs, from my father in law. He kept unearthing old family hierlooms in varying states of repair when they moved house. Unfortunate, as my wife saw no reason for me to buy new ones!
However, I devised a cunning and masterful plan which I put into action 2 weeks ago - and it worked!:tu (I was allowed to buy a brand new Henckels from John Crowley.) Ever see those kids throwing a complete tantrum in the supermarket? Well, let's just say it's not a good look on a 36 year old man:p
Reasons (for the wife) why more razors are cheaper, I have used this one and it has worked lol, of course it doesnt always work.
Basically my collection is mostly made up of very old and/or difficult to replace razors. I have told my wife that every time a razor is sharpened ,metal is ground off of the razor thereby making it smaller, weaker, and less able to stand up over time (ok not entirely tue...I did take some creative liberties). Because many of my razors are hard to find, even though it is expensive to buy them now, their value grows each year, so if I had to replace it down the line I could easily pay twice as much and that doesnt accont for inflation. I also like to throw in the fact that as a razor gains collectability appeal it gains value and will never lose value as long as it remains in good condition, with requires not using it all the time. I explain that this allows me to effectively barter with, or sell one of my razors for a bit of money if needed (the catch is you actually HAVE to at the least trade one every now and then, and yes I took some creative liberties with that line as well). Therefore I need more razors so that I dont over use, destroy, or cause a valuable razor to lose value in case I ever need to sell or trade it. :D
My quarter master used to ask me how many mags I wanted. The answer was how many can I have ?.
I had to carry the buggers though which ain't the same for razors.
My sensible answer is..will I use all the ones I have in a timely fashion, coz I want to shave with them. If I have a razor I tend never to use in a rotation then it goes. Unfortunately this leads to me aquiring another to replace it.
I would probably only have 3 or 4 but Bill Ellis and Joe Chandler have too many goodies and it would be just plain rude not to buy one now and again. :w
Gary
Well, if you're looking for a reason to explain to your wife why you need more than one razor, explain to her that a razor must be "rested" for at least 48 hours after shaving so the cutting fin can regenerate.
Is this conventional barber's wisdom true? Maybe..... maybe not. For a long time, I thought there was no way resting a razor could have any benefit but..... I heard a theory from a prominent metallurgist that made sense - just as a theory, anwyay.
Carbon steel corrodes merely from contact with air and oxygen. Fish hooks are "acid" sharpened and I've noticed that an acid etch will not only eat the metal but will eat it in such a way as to leave a crazy sharp edge. So the theory was that the natural microscopic corrosion that occurs during those 48 hours is removed when you strop leaving a brand new, fresh "fin".
If nothing else, it makes for one heck of a good explanation for why at least three razors are necessary in a rotation. :D
I suppose every time Bill or Joe
pops in and says "more razors
added" I end up buying another
one.
I hope that they continue to buy
and restore razors, so I can keep
adding.
Terry
There is no absolute number it changes from day to day. When you get a new razor one-day the magic number goes up the next day.
What sweetie don’t you know that every time I buy a razor an angle gets its wings? :roflmao

Secretly nip away and buy those pair of shoes she said she liked but cost too much etc. The rest, as they say, is Henckels - I mean history.
Well, I bought a tool roll with 8 pockets so I thought it would be nice to have them all full. Plus that gives me a nice 7 day rotation with one spare, it gives a little variety in the morning shave. I definately have my favourites though, and these tend to get used more often then some others. :)
John Lee Hooker would be proud of you. George Thorogood would not understand, even if he is "bad to the bone"!Quote:

He just bought a 6/8 Wacker frameback off me this morning so that's 3 - he's well on the way to being a razorholic! :roflmao :wQuote:

The two 'mistakes' will go to ebay when the 'proper' razors arrive, so that will leave me with a rotation of three plus one to practice on.
I just put 2 in the mail for ya. It should be there within a week really.
