Very Lost....

So I went ahead and ordered a straight razor set off of Tony Miller last week and it arrived in the mail earlier this week. I decided that today would be the day I tried to shave with a straight razor... and I screwed up.

I watched Lynn's video a few times and then decided to give it a go. But when I was stroping I accidently rolled the razor the wrong way once or twice (I don't think I was stroping the right correct way even when I did roll the razor on its spine.) So when I go ahead and start shaving after I strop and everything else I feel the razor pulling at the hairs and not actually glideing smoothly. So I think I may have inadvertently messed up the blade and now I need to get it rehoned but I'm not sure if I really do or if I'm just stropping the wrong way. So after I felt the razor pulling on my hairs, I tried to restrop and it kept doing that... so I went back to shaving with the DE for now but I'd like to give the straight another shot.

So I was wondering if there was someone or someplace in NYC area (I live in queens but travel to either LI or manhattan is ok) that would be willing to show me how to shave with a straight. The best time would be on the weekend. Thanks

A little pulling is ok. If it's not hurting you why not go ahead and do a shave? That's what it's all about. If you get to shaving then things just improve with experience.

I agree with Howard. I'm still learning here, and I have a couple of well-honed razors that pull a bit. It seems that technique has a lot to do with getting the razor to glide and not pull. Each shave I'm noticing an improvement.

I doubt rolling the razor on the edge once or twice would hurt it if you weren't using much pressure. If your strop wasn't damaged, I'd say everything's probably OK.

Stropping properly might even help fix whatever damage you might have caused.

Keep at it and the technique will come.
