It's been fun reading this thread. I have a few comments.
First, if you're doing an old Ebay razor, you can save yourself a lot of grief by looking under the microscope at 60x the first thing. If it looks like a rollercoaster, I tape the spine and honeont eh!K until a neww edgeis established which is all even at 60x and doesn't have oxidation. Now, you'll reach shaving sharpness much sooner.
Second, I notice you're a DE shaver and learned on the Feather first. I still use both. Don't expect a str8 to be as smooth or cut with as little pressure as a DE or Feather, but there shouldn't be a big difference.
Third, I have razors from all our best honemeisters and I have never been able to get the HHT to work. My hair is too fine. I had to learn the thumb test, which is consistently reliable for me. I notice Alan has you doing it some. If you want to know whether the razor is sharp do the thumb test after trying it on a fresh single edged blade. You should get the same feeling. Notice how the blade goes past grabbing and you can actrually feel the edge?
