You could try something like this, I borrowed it from my little boy. It makes shave time much more fun. :)

Oh my Gawd:))
Thats awesome Readensteel!! I use my oldest sons sippy-cup holder for a scuttle?!? it's Buggs Bunnys Head and plastic so it safe in the shower. Besides he 22 now and doesn't use it anymore.... I hope?
I bring a damp sponge to the blade and wipe. Doesn't get near the sink except to clean post-shave. Then it has my full attention.
I rinse it off in the sink just like the OP. It has worked out so far because I pay really good attention to where the blade is all the time (ever since a close call with the tip of my thumb bumping the round edge of the blade).
I like the washcloth idea though, you can never be too careful. Especially for new people like myself that wouldn't be able to repair it.
I just use a regular household sponge. Wet it before I start shaving, then to get rid of the soap & whiskers after a few strokes, I just "strop" the blade against the sponge. Never have to worry about hitting the faucet, sink, etc. :) When a pass is completely done I just hold the sponge under the running water and rinse it all away.
It's Darwanism man...
If i didn't trust myself near the faucet I certainly wouldn't trust myself near my nose!
