I start at my sideburns and go down my cheek. Then under the nose and the chin. Then I go down my neck from my jaw line. You have to figure which way is best for you and the direction your whiskers grow.
I would read starting here first.
Beginner's guide to straight razor shaving - Straight Razor Place Wiki
You could check out the following people on YouTube: Mantic59, geofatboy, and Lynn Abrams on shaving with a straight razor, double edge safety razor, making lather with a brush.......hope that helps you out.
With the retro shaving equipment, you learn to get closer and more comfortable shaves. You can shave every day and the experience for me has actually become a time of relaxation and reflection. It actually leaves me with a feeling of confidence and puts a spring in my step. Phychological to be sure, but important to a feeling of well-being.
It's my end of day ritual after supper. With no rush to be anywhere, it leaves me all evening to faceterbate in the comfort of my ez chair.
Side burns & cheek, on to neck, finish with chin . . . I wear a mustache.
I can't shave everyday mostly because my hair isn't really long enough to shave after one day. When I do shave, I start out washing my face several times with hot water and then leaving it damp while I lather up my shave cream in mug. I then soak my face in a hot towel for several seconds. Following that I rinse my face again with hot water and then I apply my shave cream. When I shave, I start with cheeks, followed by neck, chin, and then under the nose is last. After, I wash my face with cold water, then I apply aftershave. Thats it!
I definetely recommeng Geofatboy's videos on youtube. Prior to getting a straight, I watched all his straight vids on shaving for like a month and when I finally got my own, that shave wasn't nearly as bad as many beginners have it.
I guess did not understand your question. I always start with a nice hot shower and then shave. It is the end if day ritual for me most days. On Sunday I try to enjoy my shave mid day, and then relax with the wife.
I've dabbled in evening shaves off and on but alas, teaching an old dog new tricks is quite a challenge. I've been a morning shaver for most of my life and for the most part this appears to be the plan moving forward. Generally I start with a nice hot shower (unless I've just finished PT or the weather is extremely hot, in which case I'll crank it down to lukewarm.) While I'm in the shower, my brush is soaking in a sink full of hot water. I splash my face several times with hot water then lather up. I leave the lather on my face while I strop my razor, then first pass is simply North-South. A second pass (when I have time or just feel like it) involves a splash of hot water, a relather then a South-North pass. Then generally a splash of aftershave of some sort (witch hazel, Skin Bracer, Clubman Bay Rum, etc.) While the after shave dries down a bit, I brush my teeth then apply the finish (generally a cologne or EdC of some sort.)
Thanks I will look there YouTube stars up tonite and repeat and learn can't wait to order my razor this week I'm getting really nerves as well as existed to I will be asking more in time but for now enjoy your day
It's great that you're excited, it really is an exciting thing, at least it was for me. I'd highly recommend watching videos, it's pretty hard to explain what a lot of us do and why sometimes. When I analyse exactly what I do, it starts to get really complicated and really specific to me and my face. The principles (the basics or guts of the matter) are what you really need to concentrate on, rather than too much of the specifics or details...
