I am no expert on the topics, but I have seen some VERY old strops that were fine with possible exception being that some treatment was needed to soften them up.Quote:

I would speculate that a good brush and strop should serve you a lifetime if not subjected to mistreatment...but it depends somewhat on your environment/humidity etc.
If both strop and brush are good they should both outlast you easily IMO. With proper care (and no major accidents), they should outlast you, your children, their children, and their children's children.
If they are not so good, they may last you until next month. Who knows?

My dad had a brush for my entire life (45 years) and it still is functional. It is not as nice as some of mine but it still works.
As for the strop, easily a lifetime if you take care of it and don't knick the crap out of it like I do.
The few new brushes I have had always shed hairs at the start. Actually the worst was a Semogue 1305 boar brush that had me worried but it settled in now. I have gotten about 8-10 years out of really cheap brushes before they started to shed constantly. I guess time will tell.
