Hi all,
Probably a ridiculous question, but what do you reckon is the best length of beard hair to have your first open razor shaves on? Is it best to do it with just a little growth so it's easier to get used to the razor or would you learn more about the correct angle to use if you grew it a bit longer?
Or maybe it doesn't matter and I'm overthinking things. Lol!

Hi there, a couple of days worth is a gd start.
I agree, a couple days' growth is probably best. Due to newbie technique too little and the razor may not "catch", too long and the razor may snag and cause discomfort. My opinion only, of course.
LOL - that's a great question! I grow slow - three days is my vote!
EDIT - if you can get away with the scruff at work that is. :)
And with a 2 day growth you get that total satisfaction feeling from seeing all off the whisker remnants in the sink.
A couple days growth will allow you to see more of what your blade is actually removing and IMO gives you a better sense of accomplishment :)
At least for me, once you become proficient with the straight, you'll only need to shave every couple of days.

I totally know what you mean. I check my beard constantly to see if its long enough. I can't grow out fast enough for me! Unfortunatly my beard has always grown Sloooooow.
I prefer three to four day stubbles. Gives me the best shaves.

Edit: You think I am being facetious and you are partly correct. However, I have done a study on the width of bevels and based on the current sample (n=2,346) I have discovered that the average bevel width is 2.73mm, +/- 2mm. Now it should be clear that the whisker-channelling behaviour of the bevel plays an important role in effective shaving, and I thus conclude that the most effective whisker length should be proportional to the bevel width, minus whisker thickness, plus whisker thickness thusly thus.
Damn, mines just reached 2.74!

In any event, try stretching your skin up and over the jawline - most people's faces are stretchy enough to be able to do that to a certain degree, and it may just move it enough for you to overcome that tricky bit. Decent cream or soap is a good idea - do you also have a brush for applying it?

Yep, got the brush in the same order. Looking forward to receiving them and the next shave. Just had a go at pulling skin around and think I should be able to pull it off that way. Just a lot to remember when stepping in front of the mirror. No doubbt next shave will be even better.

i would say 2 times a week when first starting. You will probably have some skin irritation at first and take your time.
I'm saving a bit of growth up as we speak. Face was very sore after first shave but no nicks though. Second shave was alot better. Expect third to be better still, plus I'll have my new cream. Yay!!!!!!!!!! Lime scented too! :D
So ... what's the best way to measure 2.74? I can't get my tape measure that close without losing sight of the dashes. I guess I could use a pair of tweezers to pull one out ... I'll try that!

Sadly, I don't have a clue. I just wanted to tell you there should be an award for a beginner who asks a question that hadn't been previously asked and answered a billion times over. :p And just so you know, if there was such an award, I'd have never won it. LOL
James - As the years go by it becomes easier and easier to stretch the skin as far as you want. Why do you think Joan Rivers had so many surgeries. To get rid of all that extra skin! If she had continued, her nipples would be on her cheeks and her belly button would be on her chin. ;)Quote:

The Length you have a comfort shave is by everyone differend so there is now way to tell you wat the best length is.
