Not having too much expeance I guess I giving my 1 cants but personally I would go to Whipped Dog Straight Razor Shaving Equipment . they are priced pretty decent and you can get everything you need, thats where I got my first razor it came shave ready and all.
I dont understand the logic behind the sight half seen thing. How would that help make them that much less expensive? With what little money he may save on not having to spend the time taking pictures he would probably lose more from people who would not buy there because they don't have pictures. Anyway the Dovo the OP posted should be a good product (not that the ones on the other site aren't, I'm just not familiar with them) I got a less expensive Dovo for my first razor (IM also a beginner) and I love it. I actually have my eye on the one you posted as well.Quote:

Time is money, and I bet Larry has figured out the break-even point on those sight unseen deals. He persists in selling them because he's built a very good reputation.
About that 6/8 Dovo, I can recommend that blade configuration wholeheartedly. I don't have the Bismarck, but one of the other razors they've been producing with that 6/8 shoulderless thumb-notch blade. I'm seeing more variations for sale lately; Dovo seems to know they've got a home run with that blade and they're dressing it up in different scales and different finish levels. My own was about $150. The Superior Shave seems to get them, and I think I saw some at Straight Razor Designs. For me, they are ergonomic perfection.

Re sight unseen/sight half-seen: time is very much money, and the time taken to add descriptions to the half-seens is reflected in the slightly higher (but imho still quite low) price. Similarly, the time *not* taken to describe/photograph, etc., the unseens is reflected in an even lower price.
I have bought a few things from Larry and can't say enough good things about him and the products I have received. *But* if you want the security of a full description and photo, his service is perhaps not best for you. To each his own, and all that.

You probably won't need any strop dressing initially. And some peope would say you _never_ need any strop dressing -- just rub your hand along the strop, regularly, to transfer some skin oil onto it.
I use Fromm's Strop Dressing, occasionally, sparingly. I've been at this about two years, and it works nicely.
Don't try to use waxes -- they'll change the feel of the strop's surface. Neatsfoot oil (if you can find the liquid variety, rather than something mixed with wax) is probably OK.
I'd ask Lynn (or whoever you buy the strop from), and do what he says.

Hey, Crush. Its after the fact, but my .02 is that Dovo is a winner. I've honed two for others, and was quite impressed w/ the ergos. Fit & finish is excellent, 'took a great edge. The link Glen sent you for the kit was rather dramatic. 'Outstanding pricing. You're doing well so far. By comparison, I got fleeced, then skinned on my first purchases.
That is a beautiful razor. Im gonna copy cat and get the mother of pearl one. I bought my first razor without doing ANY research whatsoever. I didn't even know about this site. I lucked out and chose a Dovo but now that I look back at the haystack of crappy ones I chose that one over I realize just how lucky I was. You will really enjoy this addiction as others have said. Get some good soap and cream and try different pre and post shave products, it makes the experience all the better.
I agree with Charles on simply rubbing the palm of your hand on the strop to "dress" it. About once every 3-4 I'll take some left over lather from a shave and rub it into the strop to condition it.
