answering my own question?

I think that I am about to ask a question that I already know the answer for, I am 6 shaves in with a shavette razor, though I will admit I have only shaved with the grain so far I am getting comfortable with handling the razor, it is the first time I have not ended up adding new holes to my face, yea me!!
My question is this, do I now progress to shaving across and against the grain keeping the use of the shavette, or do I look for a nice Christmas prezzie in a razor set, (I think answer is the second option).
If the answer is the second option, there is so much good information I have read in the help section that I know roughly what to look for, but what sort of make and price should a beginner be aiming for?Attachment 113164I should point out that I have been advised by my female colleagues that I have till the end of Movember, then it goes or I will be sat on and it will be taken off.

Well get the present anyway..but I would practice more with what you have now. Going across the grain can be tricky as well so if you are comfortable with this now think of how much more comfort you will gain with practicing the other ways with what you have..I started with one as well and they are different..the straights are more forgiving in certain aspects but even less forgiving in others..

Aim for about the mid-point. Try a Dovo best quality razor. A good strop is used on all your razors. Don't go cheap and don't go high end either.

Shavettes are hard to shave with. I'd say avoid the ATG pass forever.

Id jump on any excuse to get a new razor and Christmas is the best. I think getting another razor is a must for beginners like us. It is nice to have two so if you dull one you will have a backup for when you have to send the first one off to be honed. Having a cheaper one is also good for practicing honing/stropping so its not too devastating if you screw it up. I started with a Dovo Col Ichabod Conc and I love it. It was around the 120 dollar mark and is a good razor and cuts well. In hindsight I would have started with a less expensive one but oh well. I have since gotten a cheaper one for reasons stated above. The Dovo Is the only one I can comment on but I like it. One day I will splurge and get a very nice razor but for now I am just going to stick with what I have for now until I am confident I can take proper care and am proficient in stropping/honing etc. Maybe next Christmas. I also bought a razor from here Whipped Dog Straight Razor Shaving Equipment which I here are very good for the price and the guy came highly recommended by members of this site. May be another avenue for you depending on your budget. Mine has not arrived yet so I cannot comment on it.
