Dinged my straight on the faucet

So I got my first straight in the mail yesterday and decided to shave with it today. Lo and behold i dinged it on the faucet :gaah:.
When I ran my thumpnail from the spine to the edge, I could feel it "sticking" on the edge. So I decided to try and do some backhoning on the 8k norton because I thought the edge was rolled and I could roll it back, if such a thing is possible.
When I do the same thing again after the backhoning I can't feel the edge "sticking" but it looks like there is a minor chip in the edge.
I did a search and found this tread: http://straightrazorpalace.com/begin...zors-edge.html where the same thing happened. The only difference is: he could feel the rolled edge; I can't after the backhoning.

so my question is: Do you think it's necessary to have it rehoned or is it still usable as is.

I think the best bet is to reset the bevel and start anew depending on where you are there's quite a few members on this site that could help you out just check in the classifieds under member services and you'll be back with a shaving like a champ in no time probably with a superior edge then before.

Yea, you would be best off having the bevel rest and honed up. If you use it like that it won't be very comfortable at the very lest and down right nasty at worst. I would not chance it.

I wouldn't shave with it until the nick is gone.

It might be possible but I would worry about getting scratched.

Dammit...I had hoped I didn't have to have that done, but on the other hand it's better to have it done and be on the safe side, and not have your face look like it's been shaven by an angry ferret :)

I think I might also benefit from just focusing on the shaving and not on honing to begin with. I'm having a case of wanting to learn everything at the same time.

Congratulations - it takes a strong will to resist the urge to learn it all at once.

Some of us didn't have that strength and have paid the price....:shrug:

I like that face shaved by an angry ferret bit. Resisting the urge to learn to hone immediately and concentrate on learning to shaving is great if you can do it. Sometimes the temptation is too great.

Yeah i gave honing a try after a few months and failed, but after 9 months of casual reading and researching i'v got my king cutter shaving like a dream off my norton 4/8

Gawd! Will you guys start 4-folding a hand towel, damp from hot-toweling the face, on the side of the sink. Strop the lather and hairs off there! You can see what you are doing and spare the edge! JMO!

You could also use a damp sponge in place of a towel too.

I did the exact same thing you did. Had my razor 2 days and dinged it on the faucet. I could feel a tiny tiny ding in the blade. I shaved with it anyway and didn't have any problems at all although it did scratch my strop just a little as I strop. Finally for no other reason than it bothered me just knowing it was there, I decided to put it on my Norton just enough do file the little burr I could feel down. I did that and now my blade is much duller that it was before I put it on the stone. It may be time for me to try my hand at honing now since I have accumulated a couple more razors and see what happens. I know your aggravation though.

Since you have the norton look at the janorton threads and start there

wet towels and sponges are ok but i like running water!
invest in a new faucet a tall model that hangs into bowl a wy from the sides some of them even swiel like a kitchen sink faucet... they are easy to install but the woman might then think it is time to redo the whole bathroom, a risk worth taking though

I will do my best to stay true to my learn-one-thing-at-a-time way of doing it. I like the idea with a sponge or towel, I wish I would have known of that sooner.

I dinged a Hart razor early on, and was able to feel it as you described. It's no big deal and you will see how easy it is to hone it out. There will be no evidence of a ding and, if honed correctly, the razor will continue to shave just fine. Good thing is you will probably never do it again. The only time I use a towel to wipe the blade is when I am shaving super early in the morning and my wife is still asleep, as I try to make as little noise as possible. Otherwise, I just rinse the blade. Good luck!

If you really don't want to rehone you could try the razor and judge the results for yourself. I have an old W&B that still has a small chip in the edge that hasn't been honed out yet. I use it mainly to try out different honing and stropping technique. Maybe I just have a really tough mug as I haven't suffered injury from it!
