I assumed it is setting the side of the spine so it aligns properly with the blade. Is this true?

This might help Bevel-setting in theory and practice - Straight Razor Place Wiki . It is mostly all covered in the shave wiki.

Jesus that is in the wiki ????
I never read that before, that is probably the most confusing explination of a bevel I ever read :(
When the two side of the razor come together into a single sharp edge you have a bevel, looks like this V everything you have to do to accomplish that is called learning to set the bevel..
The one part of that article that rings true and easy, is the Magic Marker test, which is nothing new in the sharpening world :)
I'm pretty sure I should change my screen name to "The divergent bevel".
Never knew it was confusing because I never actually read the wiki. I was gonna say what Glen said but being a rookie I just thought it would be explained better in the wiki. How wrong I was.

BTW how do you do the magic marker test? I didn't see anything about the process on the wiki page. BTW I am enjoying your videos gssixgun.
Simply use the Marker to color the bevel, this shows you very easily whether you are making the proper contact throughout the stroke..
It will point out "Multiple" bevels too,
