Need some advice
So I've been at this over a month now. All my razors were properly honed by a reputable srp member. I've achieved bbs anyd at the least always get dfs with little to no razor burn anymore. However, when I shave I feel like I'm tearing off a layer of my face! Its not only painful but frustrating! Anyone have a possible reason why? Could it be my lather? My angle? Any advice will be very much appreciated!
Thanks

I'm really new so take this for whatever you want but, is it more of a scraping or a slicing a layer off? If slicing I would guess possibly a combination of pressure applied on your face with angel. Scraping I have no idea. With my few shaves I've notices how much lighter I use it compared to the old mach 5. My first shave was super light and went well, Overreaching my abilities the second I pushed a little more and angled more trying to get complete BBS on my whole face and noticed in a few areas I took more than the hair and have a couple little scabs. But live and learn, and learn somemore and hopefully not cut the face up to bad. I luckily haven't had much of this problem. Anyways just my 2cents. The real pros will probably have a better answer. Good luck.

Re: Need some advice
It's like a ripping feeling- all's I know is it sucks. Maybe just my skin getting used to this type of shave....

I personally can shave with a straight at just about any angle; It might not be pretty, and it might tug doing so, but I can do it - no problem.
What I can't do, is shave at just about any angle with anything more than very light pressure, or I too will feel like I am taking off a layer of my face!
It sounds like a pressure issue to me. Try really loosening your grip. Your blade works just as well.
Good luck!

It's hard to be definite without seeing your shave in action, but I think I'd agree with the others: pressure, perhaps angle. I like to imagine the edge skimming the surface of the skin rather than sitting on it - the visualisation might help....
Stretch too. Stretch a lot. Never underestimate the impact good stretching has on a shave.
Good luck.
James.

do you use any pre shave oil or cream?

Got to agree that too much pressure and a bad angle can do a number on your skin. If you add poor lather to that combo it is even worse. I don't know about the rest of the members here but I never get a BBS in one pass and don't try to. The gradual reduction of stubble over 3 passes is much easier on my face. Maybe what I am saying is don't try too hard and force it. Good luck.

Re: Need some advice
No but I'm going to try that next.

You get this feeling from all of your razors, or are you primarily shaving with one?

Re: Need some advice
I get it with 1 more than the others. but it seems to happen with all them just less so than this one dovo.

Re: Need some advice
First I'm going to try and correct my lather and pressure on the blade then I'll take it from there. I'm getting good shaves but just a painful cost!
-
Shaving should definitely not be painful. I will sometimes shave a couple weeks worth of growth, which is no more painful for me than a day or two worth of growth (I have a fairly thick and coarse beard). To be clear, shaving is not painful for me at all. However, I have been learning to hone over the past few months and know the feeling you describe. If that pain were the routine cost of shaving, I would have a beard that was occasionally trimmed with scissors.
If I were in your position, I would certainly review techniques (lather, stropping, angle, et cetera...) and if you're still feeling pain and resistance, I would send your worst razor off for another honing and go from there.

Re: Need some advice
So I have an update for you guys.... I listen to all of your advice..stropped slowly but surely.... used a pre shave oil and made sure that my lather was nice and thick with nice high peaks... and attacked my whole face from a different angle. Thanks to all of your advice I just had the best shave my life! Nearly bbs everywhere but at the least I achieved dfs on my whole face! Thanks so much for all your advice and a happy and healthy Holidays to everyone!
