I have a brand new Hart I just bought a couple of weeks ago and last night I must have put it away with a little moisture on it and there are two water spots on it. I tried gently buffing it out with cloth and some of the oil that came with the razor to no avail. Whats a safe way to remove these?
same here, ive got a spot on my dovo too, i think metal polish would work but i suspect that im very very wrong about that so i havent tried anything. lets just see what the experts have to say.
I would try a metal polish.
NOOOO dont take metal polish to a new blade it is completly uneccesary. Try using something alot lighter like goo gone or simply try shaving with the razor again as normal then make sure to dry it properly this time and they might go away that way as well.Quote:

most metal polishes have an abrasive compound in them and can remove gold etchings and sometimes even leave fine scratches depending on which polish it is. another option I thought of is using Tuf-Glide, I use it on all my blades after shaving and have also used it on restores and it is great at removing any little blemishes on the blade but is totally safe as far as etchings and other details the razor might have. I am sure others will chime in here soon too. just STAY AWAY from the metal polish for now IMO
I'm sure you could use Brasso. It's a metal polish but it's so mild that I find it useless in that role and now use Mother's.
do you mean to say that brasso is too poor a product to be used as metal polish, but it can be used to clean off water spots?Quote:

what ever you use, try to work around the gold etch. Fact is, it is very thin and fragile. Even rubbing it with a soft cloth only, just to dry it, you will rub it away eventually.
Some say Mother's (for instance) is too abrasive to be used on plating as you minght find on some DE razors. On a straight razor blade it works well for rust and would be what I would try before going to sand paper.Quote:

I'm have no experience with the etching on that particular blade however :) I doubt if Brasso would remove it but as with most things like this you should start with the least abrasive and work your way up rather than the other way around.
Someone mentioned to start with Goo Off. All I can say about that is that Goo Off is how I (purposely) removed the logo on a Gold Dollar blade. That wasn't etching however but was more like print or paint.
Water spots can be tough because depending on the mineral involved you actually have a deposit of the mineral that adheres to the blade. I've found typical metal polish does not take off many mineral stains. I've used Cape Cod Polishing Cloths to remove them but the more you rub the more you will change the appearance of the metal. I have an assortment of watchmakers tools and they have a brush which is made of fiberglass fibers and it's small and precision enough to take stains off without harming gold wash only because you can go around the wash assuming of course the stains aren't over the wash.
To tell you the truth these days I live with the stains. They do no harm unless they are a corrosive mineral and only are cosmetic. Eventually when it's time to hone up the blade I'll remove them.
An ounce of water spot prevention is worth a pound of polishing compound.
I used a little bit of Maas on my Dovo this past week and it took the water stains off and it didn't do any harm, as far as I could tell, to the blade.
Last night I used some Mothers metal polish on a Q-tip to carefully buff away a couple of water spots on my DOVO, being careful not to get near the sharp edge or gold on the blade. Worked great.
I have had the same problems with some of my Hart Steels I used Mothers metal polish and a q-tip and it removed the water spots no problem It's a Hart Steel so there is no gold wash to worry about because mothers will remove gold wash.Quote:
